    After the 5th semester

    Advertisements

    Hi All,

I've just been accepted to AUSOM and am getting ready to get things in place. I wanted to know if someone can answer these questions for me as I'm still trying to learn more about the Caribbean schools procedures.

    1) I know that we complete the 5th semester in Chicago. Can someone tell me if we are affiliated with other places or is it just Chicago? If there are other places, is there a list and where can I find it at?
    2) After the 5th semester I assume we take USMLEI, what happens next? are we going to finish Clinicals in the same place we finished our 5th semester at?
    3) How do most students pay for their tuition? I know the tuition is great but how can a self reliable student pay for the tuition? are there loans out there that I don't know about?
    4) Is there another number for the office in NY for everytime I call noone picks up and it's a bit frustrating.
    5) I know orientation is January 9th, when do you guys recommend I arrive to the island? and do you have any recommendations regarding housing.
    6) Are there any materials that you recommend reading to start ahead?

    Thank you all in advance.

    Hey,

I am currently a MD-1 student at AUSOM. Well, first advice I have is taking things 1 step at a time. You seem to be in track and I know its a great to plan ahead but 5th semester is a further down the road. But to cover some of your concerns, Yes 5th semester is in Chicago and after 5th semester, you can take the USMLE step 1 (depending on when you'd like to take it). Clinical rotations will be in other different cities and a lot of factors play a role in that. For now, I suggest you focus your attention to the basic sciences. Orientation is on the 9th and I would suggest coming a few days in advance, 2-3 should be fine. Now, do you have a place to stay or will you find a place once getting to the island? My suggestion is, come a few days early, stay in a hotel 2-3 days while you search around for a place to live. There are 2 major cities, Castries or Rodney Bay. I prefer living in Rodney Bay but thats a personal choice you will need to make on your own depending on your comfort level. It is more expensive but a much better living area than Castries. Also, once you come to the school, there will be a lot of studying so just enjoy the extra days off and don't worry to much about reading material in advance. AUSOM has some great professors and it will be a great learning experience. If you have any further questions or need some help, feel free to PM me good day!

School does not have any loan agreements. The only option is see is through a private loan or out-of-pocket.
