Chinese MBBS for US citizens who want to practice in US

    Advertisements

    Hello,

I'm completely new to this whole notion of studying medicine in China. I hadn't really considered it until about a week ago and now I see that I've missed registration deadlines for a number of the better schools. I have a lot of questions and I would appreciate if the community here could provide some answers.

    1) Standard US medical school is 4 years. Are there Chinese MBBS programs of this length? I see 5 years, 6 years, 7 years... but I have completed basic college courses (chemistry, biology, physics, calculus) and I don't want to go through them again in China. Does any university in China provide 4 year MBBS similar to US medical school?

    2) I have missed the registration deadline for some top Chinese medical schools, but others are still accepting applications for October. Is possible to join a university medical program for a year and then transfer to another Chinese university?

    3) Do you know anyone who has transferred to a US medical school from a China medical school (let's say after 2 years, having completed the pre-clinical book learning). Is this possible? I want to go to medical school in China but not for 6 years! My family is in the US, etc. If I can go to China for 2 years, or even 3 years, and transfer to a US medical school I will do it. Please think if you've ever heard of this.

That's all for now. I've been learning a lot reading through all the threads here. I hope you can answer some of my questions as well.

    -Victor

No. All undergraduate medical degree programs, are just that, undergraduate entry programs, MBBS (5-6 years), MD (7 years), and only require completion of high school for enrollment, though it can still be competitive (but not the extreme nature of other countries at this stage). No advanced standing is offered for those with a prior undergraduate degree, regardless if it is related to medicine of otherwise. Unlike countries such as USA, Australia that offer graduate entry pathways that give a year or two credit (for the basic sciences) for a health/science related bachelors degree. Australia and some other countries offer two different enrollment pathways, those without a first degree - undergraduate entry/pathway (generally school-leavers), meaning a medical degree course of 5/6 years plus additional year of internship and those with a first or subsequent degree, known as graduate entry/pathway, meaning a medical degree course of 4 years plus additional internship year.
So simple answer is no, Chinese medical schools offer the simple undergraduate entry for those without a medical degree.

No. The majority of Chinese medical schools do not allow transfers and applicable credits. This also applies to a certain extent in other jurisdictions when it comes to medical schools, though there can be some variation to this, however not so in China. The reason is that different schools offer differing curriculum at different stages and times. Students at one medical school may cover subject material not already covered at another school.

Never heard of anyone achieving this and highly doubt it would be possible (similar situation as outlined in reply to your second question). You might like to do a "search" of this forum for more insight into this question.

    Thanks for the insight, globalmedic.

Regarding question 3, I have heard that some people do Basic Science in China and then arrange for Clinicals in the US. Has anyone else heard of this or know how it's possible?

    Thanks in advance.

It's a misnomer to think of completing basic science in China and then winging ones way offshore to complete the rest of the medical program, since basic sciences are usually covered/completed in the first year. Even you could do so, you'd enrol in a Chinese medical school (minimum 5 year program though most are 6 years), complete basic sciences in first year, transfer to an overseas medical school (? 4 year program). Since 4 year programs (graduate entry) are for those who've completed basic sciences already, you'd enrol straight into first year. Nothing gained as I see it as you'd still do 5 years, or am I missing something? Never heard of anyone completing this as you describe. Perhaps you might be confusing the final years clinical rotation (internship year) where some Chinese medical schools allow students the option to complete the clinical year at a offshore location of the students choosing. The student has to organise this, and it's important to note that it requires a fair amount of liaison between all three parties involved; the Chinese university, the hospital, and the student, so that clinical rotations and clinical hours meet the medical schools requirements. It's important to also understand that some of the Chinese medical schools require foreign students to pass HSK exam near the end of the course before the MBBS/MD testamur (degree certificate) is awarded or granted. At the end of the day, if one wants a medical degree from a Chinese medical school, it will require a minimum investment of 4 years attendance at the medical school, then there MIGHT be the option of attending the final internship year elsewhere, however the student would be required to return to the medical school for final exams, which will likely include HSK etc. If you want a 4 year program, you will have to enrol in such a program where it's offered, and there aren't any offered in China. There's no quick or easy way to gain a medical degree in China.

    Hey,

I know of a 4 year medical program in China designed for those who want to practice in the US. Then there's a fifth year in NY, it's supervised clinical training to prepare for residency. I'm pretty sure this program is one of a kind.

I'm actually accepted into the program, and classes start Monday. I'm having a difficult time getting a loan but was told I can start classes late.

Please send me a pm if you want to chat more, I'd love to share with you!! I'm pretty sure they would let you in this year. :-)

Share the details with all of us that use these forums. I would be certainly very interested to know more about the program. Does the program start in October? After completing the 4 years, then can one complete the intern year somewhere else other than in the USA? To understand this better, actually the program is really 5 years, 4 years at the medical school (without any clinical?) plus 1 year supervised clinical training before starting residency? and what about graduation etc? does one need to complete HSK exam to receive the medical degree? what about USMLE 1 and 2...
