Hello,

Is anyone still here?!! :p

Just posting to see who is an incoming student for the SMU SOM September 2016 class. Also, if you're a current student on the island, what has your experience been like so far? Anything you wish you had known before starting?

It seems many things posted on this thread are from a few years ago so I'd like to get updated info.

Thank you!

SMU has a very cut-throat program. The current 5th semester had only 3 students pass through the complete basic science program without having failed or retaken courses. Like any medical school, be prepared to hit the ground running and work hard. Since SMU is a for-profit institution they make it difficult for students to keep moving without retaking, dropping, or failing courses. You are allotted 21 fail credits and if you exceed that you will be dismissed. If you fail or drop a course, you will be required to pass the course on the second try or else you will be dismissed. Retaking a course will add a whole semester to your time on the island. Wish I would have taken some of these threads more seriously and given the decision on where to go MUCH more thought. Ultimately, the choice is yours but do not completely ignore what you're reading on here. Just be prepared to work hard no matter what.

To put things into perspective: Let's say you fail anatomy in your 1st semester which is 16 credits. You will not be able to fail anything from that point moving forward because it would go over the 21 credit limit. From that point forward you will need to drop a class if you are scared you might fail it. Thus, potentially adding even more semesters to your time on the island.
