View Full Version : List of Things to Get for School

To the new students coming this May to AUSOM, I thought I'd have a quick list of essential things that I think are essential to keep in mind:

- Computer/laptop: all exams are taken electronically via the AUSOM portal, so a computer is definitely a must.
- An external hard drive (500 is ideal-I think). you'll get a ton things that you'll need
- writing utensils and paper
- MD1: Anatomy book, Anatomy dissection book, Netter's Anatomy Atlas (Dr. Omole the anatomy professor will be really happy if you get this during lab), Anatomy dissection equipment (blades, scalpels, gloves) you can get masks if you have sensitive nose, we got used to it by the end of the semester we didn't care. Protective goggles if you want.
- First Aid (USMLE)
- Shorts / pants / skirt whatever you wear - it gets hot down here
- T-shirts / shirts
- slippers
- shoes
- dress pants/dress shirt/tie (a suit will do), a pair of dress shoes
- sunglasses
- unlocked phone or you can buy one here for as cheap as 90 EC (but you get what you pay for)
- Towels
- hand sanitizer
- cold medication/headache meds/multi vitamin etc
- water filter (I got a brita bottle for 9 bux that has a small filter and a big filtering jug that we keep in the fridge)
- OFF (mosquitoes down here are monsters), anti mosquito repellents etc
- I brought my own pillow cases and bed sheets, most places here have them with the house but I still would get my own
- deoderant-cologn / perfume
- razor blades/shaving cream: I hear it's expensive down here, I never looked for them because I brought enough from home
- converter, most houses here have converters but be on the safe side and get one
- a multi-plug unit
- ear phones (get one with a mic if you plan on using skype)
- you will use your laptop a LOT during your studies and I'm thankful for buying a fan dock that kept my computer cool. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get one, I got mine for 5 bux from big lots and it still works
- Cash for when you arrive, if you have bank of america you are allowed to withdraw money from Scotia bank for free or a minimal charge, I haven't and will not open a bank account in st lucia thanks to BOA
- Scrubs (get 2 pairs)
- Apron (for lab)
- white coat (ps: the school will make you buy one with the logo but if you have one bring it, I'm not sure if they still want MD1 students to get their labcoats for now until the school ones arrive).

That's all I could think of right now, relax for the next couple of weeks before your journey starts,

best of luck and see you all on the island.

PS: if you need a ride from the airport or a ride on orientation day you can let me know and I'll be more than happy to ask our driver to pick everyone up. just email me aamorsy at live.com
