Okay so i would like to be in the dorms for the first year at Charles university (1st faculty) as it is the best way to meet people at uni! I would like to know what the rooms are like and what the dorms themselves are like (i havent been able to find any useful information on the internet except pictures of the cafeteria which didnt look good). How big are the rooms (5x5? bigger?)? Do they have toilets in the rooms or are they just shared on the floor? Are they clean? Is the dorm building clean and newish or refurbished/renovated? Is there any gas heating or something similar? Are the rooms for one or two people or more? Can you chose your roomate? Do the rooms have to be gender based - only boys or only girls or can they be co-ed if you chose the room to be so? Is the dormatory co-ed itself?

Sorry for all the questions haha!

Thanks for any replies!

As a first year student your accommodation is guaranteed at charles university dorms. Most likely it will be Kolej Komenskeho where most students of 1st fac and other international students are housed. Alternatively you may have been allocated accomodation at Kolej Kajetanka or one of the other dorms. Allocation of rooms is usually gender based. The rooms are basic - being single - small in blocks of 2 (i.e flat consisting of 2 rooms with shared kitchen and bathroom) or double (where you share a room with someone else but room is bigger than single). The rooms have bed, table, chair and lamp and cupboard. In the kitchen there is a hotplate and fridge. You have to purchase cutlery and other things like microwave yourself. The rooms are cleaned daily. Other facilities include a laundrette and gym. The price is ~ 8000 czk plus internet 100 czk per month (very fast internet). Alternatively you can get an apartment close to your faculty (based in katerinska) for about 8000 czk and for this reason many students tend to move out.

Hope that helps.

yeah thats very helpful! Thank you so much for your quick reply! Are there any parties and things like that? Hows the social life? Are people friendly? I was wondering whether i should get a room in the dorms or get a flat! So Kolej Komenskeho doesnt have a gym / laundrette? or a washing machine in the room? Which one is classed as the best one? Sorry for being a hassle, you are really a great help to me!

THANK YOU!

I was referring to Kolej Komenskeho in the post above. Its one of the best dorms of charles university. It does have a gym and a laundrette. The washing machines are located in the in laundry room. I would recommend that you stay in dorms as you get to meet other people from your class and also other students which include medical students from 2nd fac and also american students on exchange programme. If you later decide to move out you can do so with a few friends which is cheaper than renting an apartment on your own.

Those grades are excellent & better than mine, which were AAB in chem, bio and psychology. You should be fine as long as you find the optimal balance between study and socialisation (work hard play harder). There are some people on my course with all As who are doing well and other with Cs who are also doing well. On the other hand, there are some people who had all As who failed the first year and others with Cs who are doing really good. In short, grades are not the only indicator of success. Most of it is self motivation and initiative to learn. I suggest that you improve your A level results are try to obtain a place in UK and if things don't work out apply to charles university.

I ve never really wanted to apply to the UK to be honest, somehow its just never been that attractive to me + the weather is just so warm and sunny all year round in the UK i just wouldnt be able to take it xD (sarcasm intended). I am a very motivated person and it can be a pain sometimes because i cant relax about certain things. I was just wondering, for Charles University (1st faculty) do you only need 3 A2 levels? Or more? And are they supposed to be the three sciences and math or how does it work? I know some unis ask for very specific grades in specific subjects!

Thanks!

3 A levels should be fine. Check with first faculty just to be sure as admissions requirements may change from time to time.
