Hey everyone,

I recently visited the Gdnask to see the place and the University and I took a few pics, Here is some of the pictures I have taken. I hope the university does not mind me posting pictures of the inside of the university.

Something I need to say about Gdansk, I guess it can be considered there are two town centres: Old Town which is where all the tourist, and all the nice Polish architecture is and the other is the main city centre where the big shops and shopping centres are.

Walking around Old Town would be good for eating out and enjoying the sites as there are a lot of resturaunts around there. The new city centre has the stuff you would normally find in a city. People working in the shops who usually tend to customers can speak a good amount of english, however outside those boundaries I found it difficult to find someone who can.

The university itself reminds me of those Russian buildings, its a very old building. Also most of the signs around the building are in Polish, for students doing the english course would find anything relevant to their course in notice boards. On one of them I found the timetable for second year medical students, classes start as early as 8am and end at around 2-3pm but some days end at 7.30pm. I wasn't able to see much of the actual facilities in the university as I was on my own, and much of the place is being refurbished. I did however manage to see one of the 3 lecture theatures, it was very dark so the pictures didn't really show up. It's very much a typical lecture theature that can hold about 300 students, that was the biggest one. Something else to note, students who brings their laptops in lectures will have some problems as I didn't see many plugs avaliable.

I also manage to see the Student dorms and spoke to the man in charge of the place who showed me the kitchen, bathroom/toilet and rooms. Most of the rooms there are doubles, I asked him about the singles and he said there is usually a 1-2 year wait before one is avaliable. The rooms were about 5 ish meters wide and 5 ish long, with a small table included for both I think, each with a wardrobe and an office sized table for each (though the room he showed me had no tables except the one outside). The kitchen and bathroom is shared between each floor which is around 20 I'm guessing, the kitchen is what you would see in a small house, 4 stoves, and oven, one normal sized fridge/freezer and somewhat narrow. The bathroom/toilet has 3 'cubicles' made of tiled walls next to each other and a shower curtain, that's it. I forgot how many toilet there were, it was either 1 or 2.

I personally agree with previous post advising to look somewhere else for accommodation so I have also uploaded some pics of ad's for apartments I saw at the University.

For trams, some stations (usually the main ones) have computer ticket post which are in Polish, English and German. Other places tickets are usually bought from small stands which also sell drinks, snacks and magazines (don't always expect the staff there to be able to speak enlgish).

Visiting the place is really is worth your time as spending 6 years there is a big decision and seeing the place really shows some things that simply these pictures and asking the internet don't show. Personally I chose not to go as I didn't feel very welcomed. I am asian and walking around I got a lot a lot of stares, which felt very awkward, even going to into some shops the security guards followed me. In my case I was given the opportunity to transfer to Gdnask or go back to my old medical school.

The Monorail acorss Gdnask, some places would have machines giving out the tickets in Polish, English and one more languange I forgot (I think it's German)

Below are pictures of the Old town.

The pictures you've posted are of the old BMI building, were students have the minority of their glasses. The University invested 1.3 billion zlotych into their new projects, and it seems you haven't been shown those. That is where the actual studying takes place. (centre for invasive medicine (now complete newest hospital in poland), and centre for noninvasive medicine now in progress) I think your giving the complete wrong image of the university, and its locations.

...Confused about the thumbs down from making my own thread...

:D Window Colour you're sooo sweet.. this forum has sometimes some technical problems, never mind.. but your confusion is really so sweet :D

Guys, both of your pictures are really great, thank you.. I felt like there, especially Window Colour's photos are very live, gives a feel of being there.. I simply loved Gdansk, though I consider Krakow.. especially that wet way from dorms to the school is really breat taking.. I wanted to be there.

U of T Undergrad, the new building is very impressive, there is a load of investment, its obvious.. actually we must have similar pictures of other schools and locations as well, it gives a great idea.. for myself, thank you guys :)

Hey, thank you for the replies, my apologies if I am giving a poor image of the University and no I didn't get to see the new building, I asked the manager of the dorms where the University was and he directed me to the old building, then after that I went off the see the new town for the day.

The new building looks impressive and I would have liked to seen it when I was in Gdnask.

Oh right haha, I'm still curious how that happened, nevermind then.

Great Pics! I can say that the photo are, in fact, taken at our university! The main building that you took pictures of is our basic science building, where the majority of your first and second year courses will take place. You'll be glad to know that it recently got a new paint job! Just recently, we opened our new, state of the art, hospital. This new complex is where the majority of your clinical courses will take place in the remaining years of your studies. If you'll be back in the Gdańsk area, feel free to contact us and we'd be more than glad to give you a tour of our campus! Same goes for anybody else looking to visit...Just give us a couple days notice, as between now and May we have exams from time to time.

Just wanted to say that what you see there is only a small glimpse of how Gdansk looks and you cannot just judge it by those pictures. Like u of t said everything had been under renovation and now looks completely different. As to the style of the buildings the ones that surround the school are typical german architecture pre war and they are beautiful. Obviously coming to a new place for some people might be different. Europe is not like the USA or Canada its a specific type of culture that has been flourishing before America was even functioning as a colony.

There is wifi in the Biomedical Building as well as in the Library, students with laptops will have no problem connecting to the internet, because I have connected to it during my lectures. The lecture halls are big yes, but the seminars are only 8-10 people per teacher. Rarely do classes end as late as 7:30 and as to the library there is an equal amount of polish as well as english books all of them the newest edition.

I just wanted to point out that the "Pharmacology" building is actually Medical Chemistry. There is a brand new Pharma building that was just built 2009 and is located right by the dorms.

If anyone has any questions feel to message me.

Guys I wonder a couple of things about Gdansk, would you enlighten please, if you can find some time?

First of all, is that budowy Centrum Medicyny Inwazyjnej (Central Invasive Medicine building, it means I think), is it the only teaching setting for clinical studies? If thats the case, its great, but mostly there happens a couple of different settings which have different qualities. Is this the only one setting for clinicals?

Also may I ask, what is the education system in the 6-year program, European or US? For instance with that program do the students get prepared for USMLEs? Do they take shelf exams or .. ?

And what is the class size in general? Is there any dominating ethnicity or nationality among students? How many of them are from US/Canada, how many from Europe, Asia.. ?

How are the profs, their English and teaching quality? Do you appreciate them?

I know I ask very/many specific questions and if they are too much for you, I can understand :)
Thanks in advance..

Hello Bidiboom : )

The newly constructed and opened center of invasive medicine CMI ( Gda (http://gumed.edu.pl/15446.html) ) , (everyone talks about the CMI, because its like a 5 star hotel, for patients) is an addition to the Medical University of Gdansk teaching hospital complex located on the same grounds. Here are located the centers and buildings for noninvasive medicine, and nearby the infectious disease hospital across from the CMI. Thus the University Teaching Hospital contains the majority of its structures within one area. The other areas are the so called "Wojewodzki Hospital" in the Centre of Gdansk OldTown (for clinical practice in Pediatric Surgery and General Er and traumatology), The Hospital for Pediatric Oncology Located nearby the University grounds, The National Centre for Tropical medicine in Gdynia (for tropical medicine, parasitic, infectious, etc) , and the Psychiatric Hospital 'Srebrzysko' several km away from the CMI. ( i guess these are most, i prob missed a few)
In addition, the center for micriobiology located on 'do studzienki street' and the teaching unit for general pharmacology and forensic medicine and science, located nearby the dorms on debowa street. In addition to these, the university and teaching hospital complex includes a number of other locations designed for the faculty of dentistry, pharmacology, nursing and public health which may or may not be the same as the above mentioned M.D. teaching grounds.
As well there is the famous Biomedicum building located on debinki street, where the first two years of the program theoretical knowledge takes place, and the 'deans building' on al zwyciestwa, for seminars and first year nursing theoretical courses are. and the psychology and ethics building on tuwima st.

For those who wish to study one year of the six in any other european country are welcome to join the erasmus program and study abroad.

The students who wish to practice in the U.S. go through a USMLE prep course organized by the university. (because this is the major licensing exam, the curriculum is more and more being re-structured to teach specifically for that exam) Or participate through kaplan or other preparatory courses. The yearly usmles step 1 scores are usualy quite high. (85% + i think) Those who have no such desire, as for example applicants to sweden or the u.k. do not go under any examinations as they are currently not required.

Every year the university english division 6 year M.D. program accepts roughly 150 students from all over the world. These include, saudi arabia, germany, u.k., sweden, norway, spain, poland, canada, u.s., pakistan, india and others.
the class size = 20 people per seminar group and 4 people per clinical group

There are two dominating groups, those from the EU (sweden/norway) and those from North America (u.s./canada).

Profs - all profs are very professional, have their research work (M.D. , Ph. D.) the ones that have anything to do with teaching or interacting with English division students have a minimum of a medical/communicable english. There are those who actively participate in world international conventions, and those who used to practice abroad (u.s. / u.k.) and now dominate in teaching of the english division.

we appreciate them very much, although some may seem very demanding : )

and its getting late ..
