And oh yeah, do share your experiences about the entrance exams.
Good luck everyone! :D

Hey!
I'm starting this year, when is everyone moving to Hungary? I was planning on getting there 1 week or so before the Hungarian crash course which is on the 22nd of August.

I did the exam in Sweden, here I got to do a written examination where I got asked questions in Chemistry about the noble gases and and some simple "recognize this element" questions, in the Biology part I got questions abous muscles and the different types of muscle cell, as well as some "where can you find this enzyme?" questions, in the physics part I got really simple questions, like "What's the metal pole on the roof of houses good for?", can't remember the rest of the questions unfortunately but I think I wrote it somewhere if you search in the forum.
The oral part was very simple too and friendly I have to say, I was asked to describe the digestive system, step by step, I was asked to describe and tell the difference between alcohols, alk -anes, -enes, -ynes, ether, etc..

i was thinking of coming there by second week of august to get a feel of the city before the crash course begins. i guess the exam procedure is common for everyone.the written exam had 21 MCQ's from biology, physics and chemistry with questions like 1)where do carbohydrates get digested; 2)definition of half life of a substance; 3)which is the most ionic among the following and etc. the oral interview was conducted by a nice and friendly lady professor.she asked me why i wanted to become a doctor and what my motivations were for studying medicine for the next six years.then she asked me questions from bio and chem like- 1)describe an eukaryotic cell; 2)describe ribosomes and their function; 3)how many bonds does ATP have and how many are high yield and how much energy does 1 bond have?; 4)explain the linkage in ATP; 5)describe alcohols and thiols; 6)how do alcohols differ from other hydrocarbon compounds?; 7)describe the physical, chemical properties and structure of methanol and ethanol. These are the questions I remember off the top of my head.the interviewer was very helpful and she gave hints which lead me to the correct answer if i got a question wrong.overall, it was a nice experience and i even spoke to the professor in magyar! :)

Depends on where you're from, if you're from Europa then it will definitively work, make sure its GSM and has tri or quad-band.
And what you need to bring in my opinion depends on where you're going to live, if it is in a rented apartment, then it depends whether it is fully equipped or not. If you're renting a room in the student hostel, which people have recommended me against doing, I can't answer since I don't live there yet.

I myself will bring my whole wardrobe, my pc, my phone and that's basically it.

I'm from India but my phone is GSM and has penta-band.So I guess that's one problem solved. What about the holidays though?Do we keep our stuff there or do we have to travel with all our luggage every year because we'll be renting apartments there?

If you're renting an apartment, you'll probably want to rent it long term so it would be yours even if you're out on holidays, meaning that you also have to pay the rent for the month you're out. That's how it's supposed to work anyhow, you should try to make out a deal like having cheaper(half) rent during holidays when you're not in the country or something.

To add to what Dulgar said above, in most contracts (if not all!) signed here, the landlords allow you to pay half rent in the months of July and August (supposedly, these are the months when you'd be away/on break). But you must pay for the months community fees. In fact, if a landlord doesn't agree that you pay half month rents for July & August and insists on full rents, don't argue further, just move on to find another landlord. He/She's not worth your time.
Also, Debrecen is quite a safe little town. You can leave your stuffs in your safely locked apartment during your summer breaks. This is another reason why you should look for an apartment in a safe neighbourhood.
Now, won't that sound weird if one was to move his stuff every other summer break? Actually I'd like to see a student who tries so that I can laugh my *** off. LOL. :)

hey, does anyone here have a friend or someone who might wanna share a flat?or can someone give me information about any agencies who might help me find a nice and cheap flat for rent.i have a local contact in debrecen and he said that he shares a flat with his friend and their total rent comes to 40,000HUF.meanwhile, the agencies i contacted are quoting their starting prices around 60,000HUF.

Only two people going to Debrecen this year? That seems a wee bit weird. Or maybe not everyone spends as much time as me on such fora.
@Dulgar-are you on facebook?who did you contact to get your flat?
@african_child-do you have any recommendations regarding accommodation?maybe you know someone who needs a flat-mate or someone who wants to lease out a nice and cheap flat?

Unfortunately, Debrecen has recently seen a rise in the cost of rent. No one seems to know what caused it :( . However, there're still cheap apartments out there, but with a catch. It's either they're a bit far from campus, poorly furnished (with outdated furniture) or they're in a rundown neighbourhood. Again, these are my few tips on searching for apartments in Debrecen based on my own personal experience :
1. Always start your search EARLY. There's no time early enough. Around June-July-August is the best time to start.
2. Start from apartments closer to school (<10 mins) walking distance. But beware that apartments like these are the costliest and harder to find as they're easily taken.
3. Then move to neighbourhoods away from school. Apartments here are "cheaper" and easier to find.
4. Sometimes you need to go beyond the basic rent cost (60,000HUF should be the maximum if you plan to live alone) and think about how much you need to pay for utilities like community fees and heating. If possible, insist on individual heating.
5. Sharing with a friend can reduce costs.
6. Avoid Enema's agency. That woman has a bad reputation here. There're a LOT of better alternatives.
7. Try other agencies like AliceHelps (the best!) search for "alicehelps debrecen" on Facebook, Studenthousing.hu etc.
8. Lastly, after the agents have found an apartment for you insist on seeing the landlord AND the apartment yourself. Of course, you don't speak Hungarian and the agents will translate everything. But seeing how the landlord looks/behaves will instinctively tell you whether you can stay there a long time or not.
9. Read and understand what is written on the contract. Ask for change/amendment if you're not comfortable with some rules.
Well, these are what I can remember. If some more pop-up I'll update them here.
Lastly, @ abishek, unfortunately, I don't know anyone who wants to share apartment right now. We're on summer break and one won't hear from some ppl until school resumes.
Good luck with your search!

@african_child-i'm already in touch with alicehelps. Studenthousing.hu is a very useful site as well. I'm not planning on spending more than 50,000-60,000HUF on rent and bills.(which means that I'll either end up in a flat in one of those rundown neighbourhoods or I'll have to share a flat). Thanks for the info. Are you on facebook?

There are definitively more than two persons :P I don't think most of them know of ValueMD though. I'll ask around and see if someone is in need of a flatmate. All I did was search in Facebook for Swedish people that were in the Debrecen egyetem network and started to ask, and I found a nice person that was willing to help me with everything. Send me a pm with your Facebook link and I'll add you, well, I could just send you mine as pm.
I'm not sure I'll stay on my flat though as it is on the 11th floor and I hate heights.. lol, so I'll be searching for a replacement once I arrive.

@Dulgar-there are plenty of Swedes and Scandinavians in general in Debrecen but there are only a handful of Indians. That's why its harder for me to get help from my fellow Indians. I guess I'm only making wild assumptions based on my findings on the internet about accommodation and I doubt my housing issues will be resolved before I am physically present in Debrecen.

Is the cost of clothes and electronics more in Debrecen than in Asia? Also, does anyone know any Indians who might be studying in Debrecen?

What you're asking about cost is very relative, depends on where in asia you mean. But as far as I know electronics are at the same level of cost as in the rest of Europe, what's on the other hand cheaper is clothing, but depends on the brand as finer brands try to keep their pricing the same in every country.

There is a good way of checking the relative cost of things(not everything), it's the big mac index. http://www.oanda.com/currency/big-mac-index

I'm not talking about buying Armani or D & G or whatever. I'm more concerned about the costs of everyday casual wear and winter wear. And I heard that laptops are cheaper in the UK compared to the rest of Europe, but I'm not sure about the prices in Debrecen.

Did you get to chose during the interview whether you were asked questions from Chemistry or Physics or did they decide for you.?

Biology is, of course, compulsory and its a choice between physics and chemistry.

Indeed, I arrived yesterday and it's quite a lovely little city, with very nice and helpful people. Although I'm lacking some socialising with people I can actually understand, as most people here don't know English, so I'm really waiting for Monday to come!

One tip, don't travel with too much luggage like I did, I had 4 bags and had to ask people to help me move them all the time, and if you can, avoid taking the train, try to take the university taxi service, much more easier than looking around afraid of missing your station as I did.

Noo just for the summer, I've yet to bring some winter clothes! I brought all my beloved electronics and perfumes, so nothing out of this world.

If you can carry all of that with your two hands then it should be ok, if you can't then I really recommend you try bringing less and send the rest through like UPS.

oh if you mean what you should bring for starting the Crash Course then I suggest Pen and Papers to take note. I don't know if it'd be different this year but like every previous year, there will be an Orientation presentation made my FMSA (Foreign Medical Student Association) to help you through the process of starting your life in DOTE, plus how to use our electronic system -called NEPTUN- to deal with your studying. You should take note carefully about it :D.

just registration for the Crash Course. The Official registration for your academic year will be a bit later. But as far as I remember you already can collect the paper for registration and also paying fees for them. When you come to the educational office to take those papers, ask them when can you register.
