Hi! I have an interview for SABA jan 2012 next week. How was the interview?

hey it was a phone interview and they basically ask the same questions posted on SDN interview feedback page...if u have bad grades be prepared to explain, and they ask you how you will adapt to living on island, are you cool with moving around alot during ur rotations, how are you going to pay for your medical school tuition since SABA doesnt offer 1st semester students any loan...and they ask ask you questions like what type of specialty do you want to go to? and what do you know about USMLE? do you know anyone in medical school?...it was more like a conversation

hope this helps...let me know if you want more info

and good luck

I didn't even know that they were accepting applications for Jan 12 yet, which is a little upsetting to me. So, here's a question: I am taking the MCAT in June - can I apply NOW? Also, I finishing my pre-reqs over the summer and in the fall - can I apply without those grades being in yet? Also, someone said that you can't get a loan for the first semester - is that correct? Thanks in advance.

HopefullDoc2010,

If you are from the USA then from my understanding you must take and submit your MCAT scores with the application. If you are from Canada, you have the option of applying without the MCAT scores. I knew someone who took there pre-reqs and applied at the same time, the only difference was this person had already completed a degree. I am not sure about loans...

If you have question regarding the application process you should really just call admissions, they're really helpful and know the right answers.

Best of Luck

Thanks Meds2012. I appreciate the insight. BTW, I spoke with admissions today - I asked them about the attrition rate at Saba - I was told it was about 5% (five), which was totally different from what I had heard from people on valuemd - nobody seems to know, but, everyone has lead me to believe that Saba has a 40 or 50 % attrition rate. Does anyone have any insight on this? I am assuming that perhaps some people don't graduate exactly "on time", and that some people drop out because they can't hack the island, or, just don't like medicine.....any thoughts? (I always had a difficult time accepting that half of the people flunk out.

Deposit paid!.....seat saved with my name on it:)
Can't wait to meet everyone!

....And for all those worried about their stats who have yet to interview, my stats were nothing to brag about by any means, but I was able to honestly discuss my way through it during the interview.

Quick question: Did you all apply specifically for Jan 2012? Or were you told that the September class is full. My application was completed today and I should hear back from them in 10 days but I picked September 2011 as my preferred start date. I just want to know if the September class is already full? Thanks!

They will tell you in the email offering an interview which semester that you will be interviewing for. I applied for the September start date as well, but was told I would be interviewing for January or May start (which considering the time constraints worked for me) . I'd imagine that they save a few spots for anyone who may apply late with exceptional grades/mCAT. Or they may keep a spot open just so they can say they are accepting for September still and receive more applications and therefore pick the January students based on a larger sample?

I am clearly speculating, but you will know in ten or fewer days which semester you'll be gunning for!

I applied for Jan 2012. After receiving my acceptance this past Monday, I believe it would've been difficult for me to prepare for a September start date in so little time. There seems to be quite a number of things that have to get done before actually going down to the island. (ie. getting proof of vaccinations, applying for temporary residency, etc)

Hi everyone! Congrats on being accepted!
I was accepted for the Sept. 11 term, but I am considering deferring to Jan 2012 due to some unexpected delays with my current program, etc. Do you think starting in January puts us at a disadvantage in terms of the process of residency matching? For some reason I feel like it will put us back one year?

Any insight is appreciated.

I asked pretty much the same thing when I was being interviewed. (I am starting in Jan 2012, because I wouldn't officially be done my program in time for September. And I didn't know if I would have enought time to get everything ready).
If you start in Jan 2012 you will complete the basic sciences in Aug 2013. You have 3 months to to write the USMLE part 1 and it usually takes 1 month to process (therefore, it'll take a while before you start clinicals.)

If everything goes according to plan (ie. you don't fail) you will complete your clinicals in Sept 2015 (I assumed this to mean the end of August).

However, residencies are only matched once a year, in July. So you won't be able to start residency until July 2016.

The person I was talking to , said that sometimes people can start doing research at the hospital that they will be doing residency at, other's take a break. And some Canadians , use this time to write part 2 of the MCCQE. (Which is the exam needed to do residency in Canada. This is what I'll be doing).

This is unfortunate that there is such a big gap between completeing the MD program and starting residency. (Unless of course someone fails. then this will still allow them to start residency with the rest of their class)

thanks for your reply.
ya, this is what i was thinking...
im worried because i really dont want to be "delayed" another year....but im not sure i have enough time to get everything done, as well as have some time off before starting in the end of august. so i dont know what to do

Metukah, have you started to prepare to go for September (ie: figure out funding, applying for temporary residency to the island which involves blood work and a police check?). As well, if you haven't yet paid your tuition, you might not be able to get residence you want (Matthew vs Hillside. I know this is probably a small factor to consider though.)

I know what you mean about being delayed another year. I applied 4 times to a medical school in my home province, and after the 4th rejection I decided to apply to the Caribbean.

Personally, if you feel that you would be too rushed or unable to complete your current program, then it may be better to delay til Jan 2012.
Good Luck with your decision

I guess if you delay it'll give you more time to study for the exams at the end.

so i just read on another school's forum that, "...you should aim for Saba which also doesn't need MCAT." i just wanted to clarify that U.S. students are required to take the MCAT, correct? Canadian students do not...?

sorry to have veered off topic a bit but i just wanted to ask recently applied and accepted students (congratulations, by the way!!) who would know this information firsthand ;)

Hey,

I got accepted into the January 2012 class and from Texas. To sarcomere700, yes, US students do need to submit an MCAT score.
