View Full Version : Residency position in canada vs. australia

I am Canadian, looking into going to med school at the University of Queensland. I have read a substantial amount of forums and information about how difficult it is to come back to Canada to do your residency. What I want to know is if there is anyone out there that has done this and come back to canada? Also is it hard if you decide to stay in australia to work? What if you want to come back to Canada later on?

If anyone can please give me any advice or info that would be great!

As someone who's been through this process in less competitive times I can tell you that of all the people I kept track of during graduation very few ended up returning to Canada. There are several reasons for this.

1. Lack of residency positions. You fight for what's there and aren't given top priority

2. Even if you get a residency position, pay is less, work is more and training isn't as quick as the US and is only marginally shorter then doing it in Australia (and in Oz you work less and get paid more) this is BAD for paying off loans.

3. Even if you graduate from a Canadian residency you will be subject to a minimum 5 year rural ROS where they will decide where you work.

4. Even if you graduate from a Canadian residency program if you pick the wrong speciality you will not be able to secure a job after residency. If you don't believe this check out Health force Ontario's website and see how many specialists jobs are available...go through the different options and then email them for verification. It's pretty sad that there is only really a shortage of doctors in a very few select areas.

5. All training from Australia is recognised and to return you have to write very few exams should you choose to return so then why not train there? You are already familiar with the system and if you work hard will be able to pay off your loans much more quickly.

Anyway that's a rough guide for more info I'd suggest checking out medinoz.com as a lot of these topics have already been blogged about.

Having done your residency in Oz, or you mean trying to get a match into Canada?

You can look up the statistics, but CaRMs match rate for GP is <40% for Oz applicants, and that's just counting the ones who got an interview. If you add in the people who applied, but never got an interview, or all the Canadian students in Oz it's <20.

To me the safer route (though can't say this will apply after 2012) would be to do GP in Oz, since it's 100% recognised in Canada. I get Canadian recruiters trying to get me to return to Canada all the time. Of course you'd have to be prepared to take at least a 50% pay cut to return to Canada.
