Norfolk, Va. -- This morning, PETA sent an urgent letter to Dr. ***** DeYoung, Dean of the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, urging him to provide written confirmation of a statement made by ***** Hamburger, chief executive officer of the school's parent company, DeVry Inc. The statement was made at the company's November shareholder meeting in Chicago, Ill. Responding to a question from a representative of PETA, which is a DeVry shareholder, Hamburger told shareholders that terminal surgeries on animals would no longer be conducted for teaching or training purposes.

PETA had previously received complaints and photographs from students documenting the mutilation of animals who were subjected to multiple surgeries before they were killed and dissected. Students who objected to the procedures were reportedly threatened with a failing grade if they did not participate.

"We want all unnecessary surgeries on animals to stop, and ending surgeries in which animals are killed is a step toward that," says PETA Laboratory Investigations Director Kathy Guillermo. "Ross needs to come forward and make this policy public."
