Re: Raja's Questions from a St. Chris Student
by Duncan Macleod (no login)

Hi Raja!

Here's a few answers for you. First, I have not heard anything about the federalization of liscencing to be taken over by the California state medical board. I would also be interested, if there was an article that you have read, whould you please forward me the source? Thanks. :)

When I was researching medical schools for myself, and was interested in the California question, I coressponded briefly with a Ms. Pat Parks of the California medical board, if I remember correctly she was the liason to foreign medical schools. You may want to contact her directly so as to bypass the rumors an inuendo on these forums. She WILL write you back and she is THE person for an Cali questions.

The only schools that have California acceptance to my knowledge are St. Georges, Guadalahara, Ross and AUC. All of the other Carib. schools as well as St. Chris DO NOT yet have Cali. acceptance.

When I last corresponded with Ms. Parks, she had said she had preliminary paperwork from St. Matthews and SABA, but that there was final paperwork needed to be submited by the schools in order to start the application process, which incidently can take up to two years if all goes well. I don't know if either of those schools ever submitted the final paperwork needed to start the process. BTW - applying is no guarantee whatsoever of approval.

California seems to be a prize that most schools don't have the wherewithall (sp?) to work for. Their standards are many and very specific, and most schools owners don't seem to want to invest the money and effort needed in order to meet them. Many of the schools I have talked to say they are "working on" or "about to apply" for Cali. liscensure. But its like they say about pregnancy, you either are, or you are'nt! No almost or halfway.

The Bottom line is, if Cali is important for you, stick with those schools who are or you may wan't to take a chance with some school already in the process, if you really believe in the school or think its right for you.

Also if someone says that THEY HAVE submitted the paperwork, check with Pat Parks to verify. Hope this helps. Good luck with your research!

confused!?!?!
by sundoc (no login)

According to the post from Pat Parks, ALL of a persons medical education has to be completed in a school approved by the Cali board. So does this mean that a student like myself, doing his basic sciences at UNIBE ( not recognized by Cali) and intending on transferring to AUC, will still be ineligble to work in Cali?

what year are you? what school? none of the hospitals i have ever worked at distinguish or classify their residents based on what school they went to. every last one gets craped on and treated like dirtbags by the nurses and the attendings none have tags on their lab coats naming the school they went to, nor are they limited on what they can do based on where they went to. i have met residents from stanford, uc, some do schools, and carib schools like ross, auc, and even smu and unless i asked i would have never known! on top of that every last attending that i have ever asked has never generalized by saying school x has bad residents, they usually name one or two morons from each school..hehe so each school, including us schools, have good and bad grads. is it true that most of us that applied to carib schools couldn't get in in the us? probably does that make us evil encarnate? i don't think so if anything i think people that go through the carib have more desire and more courage to go through all the crap i keep hearing about. i have never agreed with wdc on anything we have argued back and forth but to call him a looser is moot, after all he is a resident isn't he. what point in your studies are you at? so in your honor i will make a generalization about you: you are either a med student at a small carib school, or failed out of the before mentioned trailer park med school. regardless of what a disappointment your academic life has turned out to be you hold a lot of anger towards carib schools maybe due to the fact that you have to write out a student loan check monthly for a useless education. who knows maybe you just have penis envy and have unresolved issues with your mother...hehe lighten up was up wdc haven't heard from you in a while. care to start up our "doctors are arrogant" argument...hehe

rrod you and I know the difference between honest disagreement and dialogue and utter garbage and pot shots by chicken**** anynoymos posters.

BTW: I have already completed a residency and and Board certidied by the AAP and through 2 yrs 10.5 months of post doc fellowship, and currently have a teaching appointment at a top 10 US medical school, so I think if AUC degree has hurt me, it's only done so on this message board in the eyes of IUHS students!

THANKS RROD
