can anyone tell me about the 5th semester in miami.

How much free time you have, tests, comp, etc. etc, day to day activities

Here is a basic breakdown of my schedule when I was in 5th at Miami. (Jan-April 08)
Monday 10-3 clinic hours
Tuesday 9-11 clinic, 11-1 class (pt presentations), 1-4 clinic hours
Wednesday 9-3 clinic hours
Thursday 9-3 clinic hours
Friday 12-1 Lecture (usually system reviews)
Sat 1-2 small group lecture on physicals

Because our class was so large they had to break us into groups, so while I had class to do patient presentations on Tuesday at a specific time, others would have a different day or time. We also were assigned to different clinical locations. I was living in an apartment that was a 5 min walk from a private clinic where I was assigned. Also the lecture center was about a 7 min walk. They try to assign you to a clinic close to your place of residence but no promises.

As you can see I had copious amounts of time to study and honestly wish I had used my time more effectively preparing for my Step. The clinic I was assigned to had a very nice doctor and he allowed us to schedule our own hours, the students assigned to the hospital have to follow a preassigned schedule. Also I felt the doctor I worked under was more hands-on teaching us how to do physicals and patient histories. According to my classmates assigned to the hospital they did not get as much attention and training. However the hospital students were finished before we were with their required hours for clinicals.

If I could redo it I would've subscribed to USMLEWorld sooner and listened to the Kaplan and Guljian lectures during my spare time. Fifth semester was my easiest semester and if you take advantage of the spare time you can really maximize USMLE prep.

You can check out my post as well, where I described my fifth semester experience in Miami. And I agree with DrSpeaks in that its best to start studying during fifth.

We took a COMP at the end of 4th semester and then took another COMP at the end of 5th. Only one COMP per semester.

i'll be starting there too guys! yay! can't wait to start. I assume since i'm a transfer student, I have to take a comp at the end of the semester to be eligible for step 1? should we start a webgroup or email group of all 5th semester students in miami. that way we can start corresponding and arranging carpools or apartment arrangements? i'm in! BTW MEDSTUDENT82 i called and they said december 21st, but don't quote me on that.

hi everyone...i'm a transfer student and have been accepted to 5th sememster as well. do you still have to take the USMLE review course if you've already taken and passed Step 1? if not, how does it work for you?

has anyone been in this situation before? any replies are appreciated.

as far as i know. I am studying on my own in kaplan and didn't hear anything about a review course. But maybe there is one but I doubt you have to take it if u already passed step 1. I assume you will have a very very light semester then. good luck and see you in miami if u come here.
bye

thanks for the reply bluevishnu!

to anyone who knows: what exactly is the comp testing us on? does it cover everything we learned during 5th sememster, or is it a test to determine whether we are ready to take step 1?

wellcome to AUA blueskies,
As far as i remember the comp had everything on it, Anatomy not so much, Physio, Biochem, path, genetic, pharm, micro & immuno the most among all when i took it, but not much of embryo. Mostly clinical Some Q was straight forward and some you'll never know. I think there was about 200 q or more i don't remember. It was 2 sems ago. The comp was given to at the end of 4th sem and those who failed had to take during 5th sem. During the 5th sem they gave 1 mid sem and 1 at the end of 5th. If you had passed the midsem then you don't have to take the 1 end of the sem. Hope this helps!
