A 70 year old man who is on slegiline for his Parkinson. He is depressed and visited his psychologist in New Mexico. The state of New Mexico just passed a law to allow her to prescribe psychotropic medications. She gave this old man fluoxetine. Two days later this patient died because of drug interaction. Why?

Selegiline is a MAO inhibitor and Fluoxetine is a SSRI... and if given together.. will get serotonin syndrome causing cardiovascular collapse. Other effects include: muscle rigidity and hypothermia.
