    Optic Nerve/Peripheral Nervous System

    Advertisements

    Hello all,

    Quick question...

why do we say that the PNS includes 12 pairs of cranial nerves and not 11? When reviewing embryology, I came across that the optic nerve is a direct outgrowth of the CNS (neuroectoderm derivative). As a result, should it not be proper to classify the optic nerve as part of the CNS and not the PNS?

yes, you are correct--it is also the only cranial nerve (except CN5) involved with MS because it is myelinated by oligodendrocytes--

Side note: does anyone know the pathophys behind why trigeminal neuralgia occurs with MS?
