    Starting in May 2012!

    Advertisements

Hi, I got accepted to the Sint Eustatius School of Medicine and will be starting in May 2012. I was wondering if any other people will be starting there in May or any students that are already there that may be able to answer some of my questions. I would really like to get some info from students that are already there for things such as housing and costs and clear some things that ive heard. Please get back to me and looking forward to starting in May! Please Comment or PM me so we can talk!

Hey! Where are you from? Did you decide on where you are going to be living? I hope your search is going well, and getting prepared! Are you getting a car for the island?

Congrats on the acceptance! USESOM is a great school. If your motivated and can handle the rigors of medical school- it's a great choice.

If you have any specific questions let me know!

Hey Thank you! Do you have any good study advice-- Good books to read for each class, like Anatomy, Neuro, Physio. Also any advice on where to live on the island?

    Thank you!

Hey all, I too will be starting in May. I am actually here on the island now, sorted out housing and have seen all there is to see - in the 2 days that I have been here. The students that I have spoken to have been very positive about the school. There is a good sticky/post on "things to take to island" on the main forum page. The small stores seem to have all the basic needs - but it is more expensive than what we may be used to.
    See y'all in 6 weeks!

I just paid the deposit for a small one bedroom apartment in concordia by the owner Samuel Jackson. I dont really know how the island life is but from what i hear its really good for studying as theres nothing really to do else. Which means more undivided attention to studying. Just also bought a laptop. Getting all the other papers and things in. I heard its about a 20 minute walk from my apartment to the library so I dont really know how thatll work out, but I guess with a pair of headphone I should be okay. If you guys can tell me some other info i would be thankful for the heads up! Btw, Im from canada, hows the life there?

Concordia is in the nicer part of the island. Yes the walk is long, but it's not that bad with headphones and music. Also if you just point your index finger to the on going cars, some locals will give you a ride (or at least get you closer). Getting a ride is actually safe. Most island folks are very friendly. There's not much to do for leisure activities. If you don't like studying at home, the administration building/library/testing center are much closer to you than the school itself, so you can study at the library if you like. Internet speeds were slow at residence but they are very fast at library and school. Bring Hard Drive full of movies to keep you entertained. Be prepared to work hard, stay away from 'student drama distractions' build a good group of studious friends that can help you stay motivated. It's a tough life at times, you will be bored out of your mind, but just keep your head in the game and you will make out of it.

    Good Luck!

Yeah as far as I know the librarys open till midnight which sounds good and Im definately not looking for student drama. Just want to go there and get to know everyone and get through everything to the best of my abilities. As far as cars and things go I dont think its worth it to get one but I dont know how itll work out once I get there. Thanks for the heads up, if the locals are helpful that seems like a really big plus! Ill probably be arriving on island between May 2nd-5th not 100% decided yet, but it would be great if I had someone there who could introduce me and show me around, would really help the "adjustment process". Hopefully when i get there some of you guys will be there and we can meetup! Thanks for all the help guys, really appreciate it!

Hi AmbitiousOne! I will be starting out in May too! I haven't found a place to stay yet, but I am booked to arrive on Statia on May 1st. I got all of my textbooks already, but I'm still in the midst of packing. I'm also interested in what's available on the island (e.g. food, hygiene products), so thanks for starting this thread.

    Hi again +oil,
There are many small grocery stores and one large one on the island with plenty of food and food choices. meat is frozen. There is a green market in Zeelandia with fresh produce grown there and there is Mr.Hazel's Produce with fresh vegetables he grows as well as what he gets in from close by islands. Duggins Grocery has some organic foods. All hygiene products, over the counter medications as well as a pharmacy on island, bathroom essentials etc... If you color your hair, pack in your checked luggage your own hair color(can't take liquids in carry ons) because choices limited here, but everything else is here. Packaged products cost about 50% more than in the states (duty tax and shipping), but a single guy or girl will do just fine. If you take medications, bring 4 months supply. You can renew those prescriptions when you go home on break, but if you stay here instead you will need to be covered. Some prescriptions can be sent here but it takes 2 weeks to a month (sometimes more) to get packages or mail from the
states...there are a few scripts you can get here but you would have to talk to the pharmacist about that way ahead of time. Pharmacy is in Golden Rock (not the hospital anymore for you old timers lurking here).
That is about it! Along with an external hard drive for your computer, perhaps some 100%cotton pillow cases and/or bed sheets, one set of dress clothes (professional wear only for orientation day and special days), your text books just for the semester you are entering, and you will be fine! Duggins dept store(above the grocery) has all household goods except the sheets are poly blends, and Rivers Dept store household goods too. Paper Corner has increased their inventory so you can get headsets, printer ink, basic computer essentials and school supplies easily. JUST NO CANADIAN MONEY. Do not bring canadian money. The island's official currency now is U.S. dollars and you can get dollars from the ATM with a little fee charged to your U.S. bank. Canadian ATM cards works too, get US dollars out but I do not know what your bank fee will be. Credit cards can be used some places, but restaurants and many stores take only cash or local checks. So far, checking account is free at First Caribbean International Bank but you better get info from admin here on island for current banking informatin. dont know about Winward Island Bank- those are the two banks on island. Welcome aboard.
