Anyone taking Michigan review course in January 2012? I visited hotels and have info

I plan to take the course in January and am wondering who else might be. Where will you be staying?

I will give you my experience visiting the two hotels which I did around a month or two ago. Please keep in mind this is just my experience/view, others views may be different.

I visited the Marriott where the course will be held and they offer weekly shuttle service (free to students taking the course) to the grocery store. That is a major plus for someone like me who has no car. They also have a decent size fitness room (which I personally need). The room they showed me was nice. Bathroom was a decent size. They said they will add a microwave and fridge to students rooms (there were not any in the one I saw). Laundry detergent I think is free at front desk. Read up on tripadvisor if you want to know about the hotels. I asked them about the previous bedbug issue that someone posted about on tripadvisor and they said they have not had an issue in years. They serve breakfast buffet (its the only meal the hotel offers and there is no restaurant on-site) at $4 per day/breakfast for students. I think its normally $8 for guests (not sure). This hotel seemed to have more traffic but light traffic on the day I visited. The thing I did not like was the chlorine smell near the front desk because the pool is just to the side of it. It's an enclosed area but you can still smell it. The front desk people were friendly and volunteered info about the hotel (like the grocery service).

The Extended Stay is the hotel I saw first. The front desk person seemed more quiet and didnt really volunteer much information about the hotel. She asked me if I had seen the Marriott first (to which I said no). The room was fine, but the bathroom seemed smaller than the Marriott one (from what I recall). Its located across the main road almost half a mile from the Marriott. It's on the interior of a curved road. It seemed more secluded for some reason (to me atleast). They dont offer breakfast or meals and no restaurant on-site. Laundry I think was more expensive than the Marriott (forgot how much). They have a stove so thats a plus. No fitness room when I visited. I dont recall anyone mentioning bedbugs on tripadvisor at this hotel but you'd have to check to make sure. I have no idea if they have a weekly shuttle for groceries, the lady didnt mention anything to me about it but I did not ask either.

I personally prefer the Marriott, which was interesting since I planned to stay at the Extended Stay initially before visiting. It just seemed more lively and the extra things they offer students seems like a better deal to me. Plus they have 2 to 3 restaurants right across the street in a plaza, and the lady mentioned there are 2-3 places that deliver (I am guessing they also deliver to the other hotel as well). That's my experience, but it might be better to ask people who are actually staying there currently as I only visited once.

The good thing is there is bus service in the area and several restaurants on the main road nearby. There is also a door-to-door shuttle service which runs I think $4 per one-way trip or something (I looked it up online), which serves the immediate area. You have to call to find out if they service the locations you want to go to.

There is a Post Office on the same street as the hotels (on the Marriott side of the street but further down). There is also a library on the same street near the Post Office.

    Hope this helps.

Again, if you are planning to take the course, feel free to contact me or leave a comment here. I used to live about an hour or so from the area so I have been to Farmington Hills a few times to shop and eat.

I heard today from another student that the school will no longer be contracting with the Courtyard Marriott here. The hotel is having some issues so it makes sense. I heard the course will now be held at another hotel. That's all I can tell you since this is second-hand information. Please confirm with the school.

I also heard that the Extended Stay might be getting a shuttle for grocery runs. FYI.

If I had to do it again, in the Winter months I'd stay at the given hotels because its more convenient than having to drive in snow. However, in other months I think I'd prefer to rent a separate apartment and drive a short distance (if I had a car). But that is just me. However, convenience is a huge factor with people and for that reason the hotel option should be fine.
