I will probably go there for Sept. term...called FA office and they said to send them credit info and username and password from truecredit.com. I asked does the school have loans?? answer was yes...I also asked is it from a bank or credit union? answer was it was a bank. I ask what is the name of the bank? answer was I dont know..some privately owned bank..so does anyone know that the school really does have loans now or no???

There is NO LOAN!!! They are not in the process of working out a loan with a bank!!! The reality is that there are no banks willing to invest their money in a Caribbean school. The school has been telling students to pay their tuition and that when the loan comes, the school will reimburse them for paying off that term.

The last time the school said they had a loan in the works was at the end of August. To prove how “serious” they were about the LOAN, they even sent down their very rude “Financial Aid Director” I.W. The lady spent more time outside smoking her nasty cigarettes and talking on the phone to her kid back in the states. The loan presentation was CRAP!!! She could not give deadlines for the loan application, the time process for the loan—anything. Why not?? Because it really did not exist!!! They had no real set up with the bank. How do I know? Because I called the bank myself!!!

They’ve been trying to CONVINCE a bank to loan them money by presenting them with the best students with good credit scores to see if they would lend to them. The loan itself was crap!!! It was going to be an interest only loan that had to start being paid back immediately!!! If students had money like that, they would not need a loan!!! Not only was the school going to get what they needed for tuition, they also got a 10% cut from whatever amount you borrowed right from the start!!! Now the loan has been cancelled. IT NEVER EXISTED TO BEGIN WITH!!! There is no proof on the website that it ever existed.

To ALL prospective students and to all current students: In reality the school is not obligated to present us with loans. It just makes them more marketable if they do have them. You MUST have your own money if you plan on coming here!! Don’t screw yourself over by thinking that a loan is right around the corner. The school has been saying that for OVER A YEAR to keep students coming in.

To all my current students with outstanding balances…what are you going to do?? To all my 4th term students with outstanding balances: How far do you think you can go??? After 5th term, do you realize that if your balance is not paid in full, you do NOT sit for the USMLE Step 1??? You are stuck.

    not all true

i cant agree with evrything dd said. i spoke to a bank rep when they announced the loans last month. the loans were legit. dont know what happened since then and ny isnt saying. but i have to believe them when they say that the program is just suspended and should be back online soon. no reason not to believe them. they need the loans as much as i do. will have to transfer again if there isnt any money. hope not.

The loan was not announced last month, it was announced at the end of August. The NY office did distribute a letter through Dr. N as to why the loan is no longer available (besides the fact that it never existed to begin with). Did you not get it? Everyone needs the loan. However, you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket. Look into other options because there have been students who have been waiting well over a year for the school to come through on a legitimate loan...No reason not to believe them?? Yes, you must be new to the loop...lol

end of august or beginning of september. sorry wasnt exact.

i did see the announcement and like i said i know the program was real at some point. the bank is real and has a history. even found a video of an interview of the ceo on cnbc.

i am new and probably havent dealt with this as much as you. but the loans did exist and we both know the school needs them as much as we do. i got the same story as you about needing to pay for school. not sure if i can make it past the next term. but most of the other schools dont have loans right now either. so where do we go next?

I don't know what's true from what's not. Whether there's a loan doesn't matter because even if it did exist, who would have been eligible? With the GPA and credit score requirements (as well as the absurd monthly payment, as DD noted), I highly doubt many students would have been offered anything.

The reality is that nothing is certain at a Caribbean school, especially at one that is as young and least established as SESOM (let me know what you find people who have actually heard of the school/island). We (current and incoming students) took a mighty risk in coming here. I honestly believe the school will be better, financial situation notwithstanding. Some of us, myself included, knew about the financial hurdle in advance and still came knowing that we would have to pay out of pocket. But we're a minority.

Like DD warned (and I've posted before), to any prospective students, know what you're getting yourself into. I know several students (especially in the higher 4th and 5th terms) who have not paid a dime since day 1 of medical school and more who have an enormous debt in general. I can't even imagine where the current 1st termers will be in a year or so.

I'm not saying all this to scare anyone, but it's what I've gathered over my few terms here as something close to the truth. The school is a hidden gem in that the new dean seeks excellence in all students, faculty is improving, the study environment is perfect and clinicals are excellent. But it will be extremely difficult to enjoy those if you can't pay the school. Only the 'top'/'big 4' Carib. schools have loans but keep in mind that all of those schools (except Saba, which is having its own loan issues) have a ridiculous price tag. If you can't afford Statia, how do you expect to later pay back those schools? It's more difficult to transfer as it is and it will look bad on your record to residency programs to see you switching back and forth between schools.

To DD -- I don't know what will happen to those students who have such a debt. I have friends at other schools who have resorted to getting random online degrees to pay for school. What have you looked into?

    amen.
i totally agree with DD. i am stuck along with my schoolmates. meanwhile the previous loan interest and payment accumulate.
more serious thing is.... a director from a hospital (i can't give out names) have said that statia is closing down with confident, so.. i can't get a clinical rotation at that hospital. i hope, he is wrong about statia closing down. but .. with the loan situation, new dean, new professors, situations on the island...., ny office not giving us any info nor helping us..... really makes me wonder.......

There is not enough information that indicates the closing of the school. There is not a single complaint from clinical students. Like most of the schools in that area, the school has loan problems and some other problems.

We have read several posts in the past showing over-reaction to the situations and possibility of school closure.

Canadian students are getting loans. These sites are full of a lot of optimism and a lot of pessimism, it appears that the truth lies somewhere in between.

The school officials should clarify their position as to the loan issues and other issues. More importantly, the school officials must continue to be cordial when dealing with the students.

I have been reading these sites from the last many months, it appears that the clinical students are reasonably satisfied with the rotations they have. The school administrators must continue to enhance quality of the Basic Sciences and continue to resolve the loan issues.

I agree with DD 100%. Everything she (or he) said is true. Do Not come to this school if You can't pay out of pocket. Do your self a huge favor.

Oh Boy are there a great deal of pessimistic opinions and not to mention Trolls roaming around trying to start negative rumors over our school.

Its interesting how many of these people are from MUA, St. Matthews, UMHS, etc...most of you Trolls should worry about passing USMLE step 1 and moving on with your life instead of constantly bashing our school. Its interesting how much free time a great deal of you have...Must mean your school academics is not as challenging.

Instead of starting negative rumors, why not pick up your Iphone make a simple phone call to the University and clarify your thoughts and concerns over student loans. Hmmm..but that would not allow the negative bashing.

The school is not closing down, The school is in good shape, and if everyone focused on passing their classes, and learning medicine instead of constanly (almost weekly) trying to stoke fire to sensless useless verbage maybe the world would be a better place.

So shut your trap, stop trolling around our school forum, and I am sure your Mother once told you this " If you have nothing good to say, don't say anything at all".

Lastly, Constructive dialogue is encouraged here but not verbal trash.
Try to elevate yourself above gossip, rumors, and fear mongering!!!
