    warning to dog owners

    Advertisements

Just a warning to anyone who has dogs (especially those who live in or near Terres Basses)....someone poisoned one of our dogs Friday night. I just happened to look out the window and saw one of our dogs stumbling around outside...he kept walking into things and falling over. He couldn't see anything and had no idea where he was. I brought him inside, and he just fell over and started having seizures. He couldn't sit, stand or even hold his head up and was drooling uncontrolably. Luckily, we were able to reach the vet on his cell phone and get him to meet us at the clinic. After a very touch-and-go night at the animal hospital, he finally started to come around and was able to come home yesterday afternoon. He's gradually getting better and returning to his old self. However, the vet said that someone had taken rat poison and mixed it into some sort of stew and either fed it to him or left it out for him to eat...so it was definitely intentional. We don't really have any neighbors close to us, but the vet said that often people who are planning on robbing a house will poison the dogs first. So...everyone please be careful. Keep your homes locked up and keep a close eye on your dogs!!!

Dang! Thank goodness your dog is better though.

Too bad you can't own a shotgun on the island.

    Hope the pup is OK...

Sorry to hear about that S...Hope your dog is OK. It seems like it's always the friendly dogs that get hurt and not the mean, local dogs that don't have owners.

I don't understand how people just dump their dogs. There are so many stray dogs on the island that were obviously domesticated, very friendly and affectionate. Sigh.

im glad your dog is doing better. however, it seems like it would have been another poison because i dont think rat poison would have had those symptoms.

    Aloha,
Yeah, my place got broken into on Friday night as well sometime during and after White Coat. I came home (intoxicated) and didnt notice that the slats that cover my window were pried off and that the screen was sitting in my shower. But, when I looked through my place, nothing was missing, thank GOD. Oh well, time to get a bigger spear gun or bars on the windows... whichever happens first.

    Stay safe ya'll,

A dog doesn't seem like such a bad idea, rnagy. Good company and great home protection.

Sorry to hear about your dog! That's a creepy thing to do.

Another student's dog got some strange symptoms a while back and ended up with a pancreatitus like episode. I think maybe that dog got ahold of a frog. Lots of frogs and toads around here have little poison glands behind their heads that can be fatal and I know a lot of dogs unfamiliar with the local fauna and flora tend to eat things they shouldn't...

I am afraid that this might give you false sense of security for newbies when it comes to stray dogs which are hundreds or thousands in the whole island.

I and other guys had some episode of dogs that comes in pack and aggresive especially in jogging routes and secluded area.

I had three large sized dogs that surrounded me and almost jumped at me. I managed to calm them down and let them backed off. it happend by the north side of golf course with a lot of bush. And had a few more episodes when I was on my Bike in french side.

    just becareful with stray dogs

The actual poison was either organophosphate or cyanide...both of which can be found in rat poison or some other pesticides. I looked it up on the CDC website and in the Merk Veterinary Manual, and those are pretty classic symptoms of both.
