    What you like about AUC

    Advertisements

I've applied to AUC, and I think I have a good chance of getting in. 3.13 (Nasty 3rd year w/ 2.4GPA) Undergrad, 3.72 in Medical prerequisites, 30 MCAT, and possible 3 publications by June. I just wanted to find out some of the reasons other people have chosen AUC.

So far, it seems significantly less in tuition costs than SGU with about the same or less cost for apartment rental. The school is also significantly smaller with pretty modern facilities. And, most island commerce is conducted in U.S. dollars and direct flights are available, reducing the strain/cost of layovers and travel. Duration of classes seems short at 38 months, leaving time to study for USMLEs as well as do some research.

My main concerns are residency placements and USMLE pass rates. Also, I was curious if anyone knows of successful transfer students back into the U.S. Also, I've never been to St. Maarten, so any tips you can give me about where to stay, good sources of information, and other stuff would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

If all goes well, hopefully I'll be seeing some of you on the rock next year .

I will be gone by the time you arrive but...

You know what I like the most--cheap booze and a sports betting place two miles from my house. Every Sat, I would head down and place my bets on football before I studied all freakin day. Man that is the only thing I will miss.

If you fail at AUC, SGU, or Ross why not transfer to SMU, if you fail at SMU, why not try another SMU.

the fact that people's biggest concern about the school is a sports book and where to get sushi doesn't by itself tell you anything about the school other than things must be fairly well if those are some main concerns.

i think the school is very well organized once you get there and into clinicals. the teaching was more than adequate, the facilities are top notch...i miss my dorm! and you get plenty of time to study for step one and are very well prepared for clinicals. i kjnow it may not seem that way but even i who spent as little time as possible in intro to clinicals b/c i had step 1 3 days post 5th semester was better prepared than i thought and cruised right into examining patients. they quote the first time pass rate from 81-87% depending on semester and i posted the PP slides from the school's own meetiung on this site just look through my posts. it also correlartes AUC/Undergrad GPA and MCAT scores to pass rates....

clinicals have been a breeze to set up. i had my choice of at least 3 different sites the day after i faxed my results staring anywhere from the same week to a few months down the road. i would say if you do your part, study, pass, and do everything with time to spare you will have a very easy time and an overall good experience with the school.

i am about 10 months from graduating and would highly recomment the school to anyone after they have looked at US schools and compared the other 3 50 state approved careib schools.

ask about what people are saying that there are RUMORS that some school policies may change again. keep in mind though that rumors are just rumors and that a few months ago there was outrage about some doomsday chganges that never materialized so keep an open mind when students on island say that the sky is falling....

    good luck

-The school is on a well-developed island that is as close to North America as you can get in the Carib

-Good teaching and good resources and facilities

-Long history of doctors in almost every field

-Great selection of ACGME approved rotation sites

-Very happy students even on valuemd!
