Well, my application is at AUC now

    Advertisements

Well, I got my application at AUC now (I called to make sure). . . now I just got to wait, hope, and pray. Anyways, I am pretty optimistic about getting in, but I just hope we don't get anymore bad news like us losing the fed loans stuff. That makes things more difficult, but what can you do. I have heard now for years that some are trying to limit how many residencies are available in the U.S. . . . do you guys think they would ever be able to do it. . . I didn't used to think so, but since the fed loan situation happened, I am not quite as optimistic about things as I used to be. Anyways, I hope everything goes well for you guys, and I hope it does for me. I originally would have liked to have gone in January, but just wasn't able to get it out soon enough, so I applied for May. Well, I will quit rambling. Have a great Friday and weekend.

That residency issue is long past. They won't be cutting any due to the projected shortage. If anything, they will add some. But you can carry on worrying about the federal loans.

The loan stuff is still going on.

And by the way, while residency spots aren't being lowered, enrollment for both MD and DO schools is being raised -- by 20%-30% at US MD schools. The AOA projects 30 DO schools by 2012.

Just thought you'd like to know.

The AMA has been calling for increases in enrollment to medical schools for about 6-7 years now... but, the actual number of students enrolled every year in the US allopathic schools has been decreasing. But, the number of Caribbean grads has been goin thru the roof. Just thought you'd like to know.

I did read they are planning on raising U.S. admissions around in the next few years becuase of the shortage. But this doesn't really make sense because raising admission to these school will do nothing to increase supply. They must increase residency spots to increase the supply, that is the only way to make more licensed physicians per year.

I suspect they would increase residency slots a couple years after increasing admissions this way they are available to be filled by US students and you dont have FMGS killing for them. why make the spots available until the peopel you want to fill them are ready

It's just the same old political rhetoric that nurses say every year for nursing shortages. Honestly, until I see the proof that things are changing in the states to accomodate the needs of the profession, I'll believe.

But in all cynicism, I think the AMA says a lot of things to keep outside influences from pressuring them. I also believe they want to keep numbers down to keep the market "hungry" so doctors will be able to work as much or as little as they want, which in turn keeps earnings up.
