The dorms are full up! Where do I stay?

    Advertisements

I have just been accepted to AUC from the wait list for the September semester, and I am scrambling to get everything in order.

I am an entering first semester student.

Orientation is August 27. Does that mean I must arrive August 26 or sooner? The reason I ask is because I am flying US Airways and they fly to SXM on weekends only I think.

The dorms are full and I was given a list of off-campus housing.

Moderator: can I post the list here on this forum?

Which apartments are walking distance to AUC?
Which are closest? I can't afford the time or hassle of a car, at least for first semester.

    Do I reserve in advance?
Should I fly into SXM, stay at a hotel, and then look for an apartment?

Which landlords are good and which ones are crooks?

    How much do utilities cost?

    Thanks in advance.

Note to Moderator: could we have a sticky on housing at AUC?

    Take a deep breath first..

The apartments closest to the AUC are Rising Sun, Lagoon View, and Campus Village with two new complexes soon to open and all under the same Management: Solutions.

I am not sure about the availability of these particular apartments and if you were given contact info I'd contact them ASAP. Also mention you're willing to move in like today or something, as they probably have a long waitlist for end of August.

I would start looking for a place as soon as possible.

When I was looking for an off-campus apartment at SXM, I was told apartments close to the school were filling up quickly.

If you need help looking for a place, contact Karen Larmony. Her information is provided on the Off-Campus Housing list provided by AUC.

I used her to get my place and she was very, very helpful.

After seeing a few places with Karen I would not use her again. If you really need someone call Susan or Helen or John at Caribbean Grove Real Estate. www.caribbeangrove.com or [email protected]

Would any past renter be willing to share about their island renting experience. How hard it is to be able to get your deposit back from any of these places (or is that wishful thinking).
Is there anyone who actually did get their money back? Any horror stories to share?
Which landlords are the worst, not bad, and the best in refunding the deposits.
Do tenants usually get the variation of ....."the apt needs to be fixed up after you" even though there is no sign of a problem.
Any replies to the post will be very helpful.
    Thanks

Flying to AUC on US Airways is an experience. Did you book with their first class promotional deal? For a thousand bucks, you can buy round trip from Los Angeles to St. Martin first class. I'm sure it's cheaper for those living closer.

US Air flys into St. Maarten out of Philadelphia and Charlotte twice a day...and four times on Saturday. I know, I live by the airport.

As for apartments, you'd be a fool not to look at a place before you moved in. Get your ***** down here ASAP, stay in a hotel or with one of the people that offered above and find yourself a place. Rent a car for a week so you can get around.

Finally, F'n Relax. I know it is stressful moving to a new place...but it really isn't such a big deal.
