Anyone thinking about going to AUC Needs to Read this!!

    Hello,

I am an former AUC student, who is stuck with an MD, $250,000 in debt, but no residency. I completed the first half of basic sciences and loved the school scoring a 225/96 on my step 1. I thought that it was amazing to be living out my dream as a doctor even though I could not get into a US medical school. However then I hit the total mess called clinical sciences at our school. Scheduling rotations was a disaster and my academic advisor who was supposed to help me schedule my rotations never responded to my emails or phone calls. In fact both my pediatric and ob-gyn cores were not schedule until november and december of my fourth year. The clinical science sites were very diverse with some being very good and some being very bad and extremely malignant towards students. I did not match into a residency at the conclusion of my fourth year so I took a prelim year. From that point forward AUC was done with me. Despite calling and emailing several of the schools deans and faculty members for advice (none of which answered or returned any of my calls or emails to date), I received no help or even advice regarding how to maximize my chances of obtaining a residency program in the future. When I finally did get in touch with one of the staff members at the clinical science office they told me that they could not help get me in contact with the faculty members at the various clinical sites I rotated at. They did however say that they would review my personal statements (finally some help). They made no mention of when to submit them or any mention of a deadline. When I emailed it to them two weeks later in July they never responded, after giving them a week they I called them back and they told me that they would not review it because it is July and they are busy doing other things (that is the AUC I know). Also when talking to said staff member about how many people that graduate from AUC do not receive residency she responded "quite a few" which is interesting because I have never heard any data about the percentage of people placing in residency only about that "100% first time usmle pass rate". This seems very misleading on their part.

Listen, I know that I am bitter and that bitter people post on these boards complaining about things, but that is not why I am posting this.

Anyone thinking about going to AUC needs to know that at least the second half of school is a total mess and that while some people have extremely positive experiences and match into some very nice spots, just as many have nightmare experiences like I just described. The scary part is you have no real say in the matter it is like rolling the dice at craps.

ANYONE THINKING ABOUT GOING HERE NEEDS TO BE VERY CAREFUL BECAUSE YOU WILL PAY AN ASTRONOMICAL FEE FOR MEDICAL SCHOOL AND THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU ONE BIT.

May be you should base your opinion on more than 1 post.

BTW AUC and ROSS are 2 sister schools(same owner).
    Good luck at ROSS!
i'm acutally basing my opinion on my close friend who passed his step 1 and didn't get any help getting rotations. he actually had to call them and tell them he passed, and they acted surprised but eventually set up his rotations.. he also said few students from Ross came to st. matthews because Ross was harder..

yeah it was my first post, but i've been lurking for awhile.

I personally know 3 friends who graduated from st. matthews, one from st. george, and one from Ross..

That's fine. Go to St. Matthews. When you have to start all over, then you will know. Always try the big 3 first.

if you haven't even taken the MCATs that means you haven't even tried to get into the US...you should try that FIRST before thinking offshore.

well I graduated with my ** last year, and due to financial reason have starting working to help out my family. now I am about to take mcat, and I feel like its either DO in the U.S. or carribean as I'm around 3.0 overall and science. I have some good volunteer work and shadow work as well. I'm hoping to get 27+ on the mcat..

So how did most of you overcome this problem in your minds before you started at a non-U.S. Medical School? I'm certain the stories were around at that time as well. I just want to know what drove you to continue when there a fair chance this could happen to you? Did you push it to the back of your mind and say "I'm going to bust my b*tt and do extremely well and avoid this situation? Did it scare you? Were you just determined to get into Medical School no matter what you heard?

This is the point I'm in right now and quite frankly I'm beginning to have huge doubts. What are some of the abbreviations mean like CK, CS, IM? Thank you for your thought and if you could send a few my way besides "If you are having doubts now then this is not for you." If that slap in the face is what I need then so be it, but if there are other opinions I'd welcome them as well.

P.S. I apologize, I only read the first page. You can disregard this since I'll probably find some answers here.

realize that many of us started the process a while ago (from me I started med school in 2004...9 years is a long time...) and the situation was a bit different....getting a residency then was a different story then...heck it was a different story even just a couple of years ago...

Thanks, I appreciate your wisdom gained through the years. What is it that still drives the 200 student classrooms? Do the prospective students read? Do they only listen to the school recruiters who say there will be 3,000 new slots in year so and so. It will get better by the time I'm there and it's time to pay on the loans? I'd love for lobbying to work out and open up thousands of new residency positions for the hard working new grads. Do I have the right to expect one when I have a 3.0 and only busted my butt for 4 months on the MCAT?

    What drives 200 student classrooms?

    1) Hope springs eternal.
    2) People do NOT do due diligence.
    3) No, in general, they also do not read.
    4) People only listen to recruiters, who are essentially very good salespeople.
    5) People think that because their uncle´s friend´s cousin graduated from Saint Muckymuck in the Carib and landed a freaking Urology residency 15 years ago, they will be able to do the same damn thing. There is virtually no attention paid to the significant changes in the system, the latest publications about the Match, or anything of the sort.
    6) People almost always overestimate their own competitiveness.
    7) People have the right to expect whatever the hell they want, but that does NOT mean that it is going to happen... and that is an unfortunate reality that bites people in the glutes each and every year.
