    Licensure Reminder

    Advertisements

Just as a prophylactic reminder to all of you, when I applied for my CA license this winter, I did not include the "mandatory leave of absence" in my licensure application. The state licensing board recognized the LOA from my transcript and immediately questioned it and demanded a written explanation. While this was an easy issue to resolve, I just want to give others the heads up in case it is not so easy in another state. So when you file your license application (and all ERAS/match documentation), be sure to not forget about the leave of absence.

    Thanks for the helpful post.

I don't ever remember filling out LOA papers with AUC. Is the mandatory LOA the one that happens between leaving the island and taking step 1?

Did you just explain it as "mandatory - required by school" or do you need some in depth explanation?

The California medical board just asked me for a letter explaining what it was and why I omitted it from my application. But yes, I did just say it was a mandatory leave of absence between basic and clinical sciences. It did delay my license by about 2 weeks

you have to list it for florida as well. i would suspect there is a random question about LOA's on all state applications. i just explained it as mandatory for financial aid purposes and immediately was rescinded once i started clinicals. i stressed that this was mandatory and in no way shape or form academic related nor did it delay my graduation. i sent the explanation in with the initial application and never got any secondary questions. in fact for some strange reason, my permanent license was completed in record time during my third year of residency..... even faster than my AMG colleagues......go figure .

California requires a lot of extra paperwork in general. I didn't have to put that on my license application. Each state is different so make sure you look up all of their requirements.
