    USMLE Step 3

    Advertisements

Hey guys, 4th year student here. This is my last week of medical school and i'll have 3 months off before residency. Can someone recommend how I can study for step 3 and get it done successfully before July? What books and resources should I use? Thanks in advance!

UW + UW cases +/- review book (Step up vs crash the boards) +/- another qbank time permitting (kaplan vs Rx)

I took it prior to starting residency. Multiple choice questions are very similar to CK I felt. Lots of next appropriate step questions. Hardest part is finishing a full day knowing you have to get up the next day and do it again. UW cases is a must. Take it seriously even though its not an exact copy of what you'll see. Very important to study from the review at the end. It gives you pretty much a step-by-step order things should be done, which helps you not just for the cases, but for the "next best step" type questions.

Application process and registering for it may actually be the hardest part. You need to register for it in a state that doesn't require any post-graduate experience. It doesn't matter where you physically take it, just where you register. Took a month to 6 weeks to get my scheduling permit, so if you're going to do it, get ready early.

What are the advantages of having step 3 done before residency? Will it be harder if u don't have the knowledge you gain from residency? Im going to be in a similar situation next year.

Honestly it depends. Most PGY-1 years are pretty similar with basics, but unless you do FP, IM there will be peds, ob and gyn which gets some people in residency. You can study for it and pass it without having starting residency if you want, but some residency's will pay for it for you, so can save some $$$ by waiting.

You need Step 3 before you can get a license to moonlight, but can't moonlight until at least PGY2, so doesn't matter when you take it.

take the 3 months off and enjoy it. you are going to need the rest to gear up for residency. worry about step 3 when you are in residency. they will probably pay for it too. since you are going into internal medicine, you should pass step 3 with flying colors with all the experience you get from your intern year. just do UW in your spare time a few months prior to the test to catch up on GYN and peds basics.

when i was in residency..... i used UW exclusively for less than a month just doing the ob/gyn and peds sections. i did not touch anything else since my training inherently gave me all the knowledge i needed. do the clinical cases because you will need to learn how to use the software.
