    Application Process

    Advertisements

Few Questions about the application process:

    1. When is the best time to send in LOR's and transcripts? A few days/week before I submit my application in or after I have fully submitted it?
    2. AUC ask for LOR's from pre-med committee or pre-med advisor. I don't have a LOR from either of those, but I do have one from a professor, Dr. I shadowed, and employer. Would this be acceptable?

    Thanks

These are questions best asked to MEAS. We are not up to date with the admissions process on the forum, sorry.

I applied for the January 2012 semester so my information is a bit dated. But here are my two cents.

    1) You should submit everything at the same time.

The best thing to do is use the online application for AUC there it will give you a checklist of things to send in. There are two portions to the application, the online application and ancillary documents (transcripts, LORS etc.) that you must send in via snail mail. Obviously stuff you have to mail is not going to get to the school at the same time as the online stuff. This means that you should probably get all the snail mail prerequisite documents a day or two BEFORE you press "SUBMIT" on your online application.

It would be very confusing for an admissions official to get your transcripts and LORs before they have even gotten your application right?

    2) The AUC website states that:

"For university applicants, official letters from a Pre-Medical Advisory Committee are strongly recommended, however, we will accept a minimum of 2 letters from individual science professors who have taught the applicant. Additional letters of recommendation from professors or employers with details of previous medical experience will be accepted to further support the applicant’s candidacy to medical school. These letters must appear on original letterhead stationery and be directly sent from the individual offering the recommendation."

You better be able to scrounge up two science professors to write you a letter. (for my LORs i gave them: 1 microbiology professor LOR, 1 neurobiology teaching assistant LOR and 1 LOR from a researcher for whom i was doing some lab work, AUC didn't seem to mind that i didn't have 2 science professor LORs) Asking for LORs from professors is pretty easy, most of them will be happy to do it. In fact i was out of school for more than a year and my LOR writers were still happy to give me recommendations (i was a below average student btw).

It would behoove you to use a service like "Interfolio" where your LOR writers can send their letters straight to the service without you ever having the chance to read what they wrote. This might seem like a bad idea, after all you probably want to screen those letters to make sure they won't torpedo your chances. Guess what? Medical schools LIKE the fact that you couldn't screen your letters. It gives more credibility to whatever the LOR writer said about you. Believe me, unless your LOR writers are jerks they would never want to torpedo your chances.

Finally, here is a bit of warning when you post on ValueMD. Make sure you do your research BEFORE asking a question. Your question about LOR could have been easily answered by going to the AUC applicants webpage. I'm not doing this to put you down but people find it offensive when someone asks a question that could have been answered with a little googling.

Best of luck to you, i am assuming you are applying for the January 2013 semester? I hope you get in.

When you do get in, i've started a thread for all the Jan 2013 applicants and matriculants that might be of some use for you:

    Once again, best of luck.
