Whats the best way of communicating with people back home for free?

Voip has been around for a while so id assume id be able to do it over my android phone with the right app, anyone know of one that would work? Google voice seems promising and is free within the US, but i wonder if it would work while at ST Maarten???

Nothing's free. Even if one would say to use the schools internet to contact your family b/c it's free, they'd be wrong. You pay tuition. Regardless, you could use the schools internet or a local coffee shops b/c there's no monthly fees of course. That's probably the absolute cheapest route.

Depending on the bandwidth of the Internet at home and at school VoIP can be good or terrible. Evenings and daytime the bandwidth is slow due to the number of people on the net. Late evenings and early mornings are better. St maartens Internet is slow compared to the states even the "broadband" can be slow. I used skype VoIP with a us number for people to call me in st Maarten. That was the cheapest to have an actual phone number for people to call. Skype to skype isusually free.

A lot of people use Google Voice w/i their GMail inbox to make and receive free calls back to the states. It's very important that one signs up while in the states, to get the free phone number. If you wait till St Maarten, you'll have to VPN back to the states or have someone back home do it for you.

I believe Android phones have a Google Voice app that you can use on your phone when you have wifi.

I use Talkatone on the iPhone when not at my laptop. Best part about Google Voice was that I was able to port my number to Google for $20 (one-time fee) and then just carry on as usual. When I'm back home I just get a pay-by-the-day plan from T-mobile and have my GV number forwarded to it.

That is only computer to computer though. Computer to cell phone or cell phone to cell phone is still nice.

I used Skype...not free, but cheap. You can get a US phone number and voicemail with Skype that's $60 per year (there may be discounts available) and then people can call you as much as they want for free. You can also get a plan for $2.99 per month that allows you to call any landline or mobile phone number in the US and Canada unlimited. When the people call your skype number, it goes to your computer. However, you can buy Skype phones for less than $100 that you use just like a regular cordless phone around the house, and they don't require your computer to be on (the base plugs into an ethernet jack). This is what I did, and it worked great. The quality was typically the same as talking on a cell phone with good reception in the US, although this varied with how good the internet connection was at the time. If you have a smartphone, you can also obviously use the Skype app when you're somewhere with WiFi. And of course, Skype to Skype calls are always free, although not nearly as convenient for the people at home as having a Skype number.
