Step 1 Scheduling and Leave req.

    Advertisements

We had our OSCA Clinical Med "orientation" today.. What I took from it is that we have one semester (Jan-April) where we have to be on Official Leave (which I guess takes away from our loan grace periods). Also, during that semester by the end of March, we have to complete the Step 1 exam in order to have scores before the leave is over.

Our class isn't looking to Match until 2014 and can comfortably complete all clerkships if started next summer/fall. So there isn't a rush to take the Step (though I understand it's best to take it early).

How does one go about scheduling their Step for the end of April or early May, when their scores will not be ready until after the leave period is over..? Are we allowed to take longer to study for the exam? It shouldn't matter b/c our class has no rush to begin clinicals anyway.

(Asking, because I'll be getting married in the winter, after leaving the Island, and that will take time out from studying). Thanks!

You can do whatever you want but they will make sure you understand the consequences (and sign paperwork) saying as much. The key date is the start date (which they wouldnt give me) which historically has been around the last week of October. Unless this has changed you needed to be in clinicals by that date to make the appropriate match date. If you wait too long though you will be fighting not only our class but also the current 4ths for rotations, which you definitely dont want to do.

I can't find the OSCA presentation that the director presented to us. Does anyone recall when she said our term of leave starts and ends (for Spring 2012)?

As long as you are enrolled in 8 weeks of rotations for a given semester, you are eligible for loans. So, you could start clinicals in late June and still have only taken off one semester for leave. Just bear in mind the loan check will not be cut until the day you start rotations (or the following week).
