    Extracurriculars on the island?...

    Advertisements

    Hey again guys.

I wanna help people while I am studying in St. Maarten, what can I do as a med student?

Note: Yes this may help me spruce up my resume, BUT I personally NEED to do things like this because I tend to become "dispassionate" when I become barricaded (entrenched in work). I need to see what I am trying to do in life in the eyes of those I will be helping, it keeps me motivated.

Any tips? Something inspiring is preferable.

lol how does being Anatomy TA or joining Phi Chi or SGA help the community? Other than that, the clubs do have events where they go help the community.

when i was on the island, there used to tutoring sessions for local middle and high school students...that was pretty cool. Topics ranged from basic math and english to freakin' ochem.

i think the school has HIV and diabetes screening also.
I believe some of the relay races help island charities
Phi Chi does lots of charitable work
Community action day as mentioned above

You can help people by studying really hard while you're in basic sciences so that you don't have any lapses in knowledge later when you are treating patients. Big time gap before seeing the fruits of your labor? sure

there is plenty of opportunity for charitable activities, and lots of other stuff. I'm assuming you are coming next semester. You'll learn all about it in a few months, so for now just enjoy your relaxation time!

Is their a medical journal club or a meeting where students can discuss new discoveries in medicine? Are new journal articles covered in class?
