    Pharm i

    Advertisements

This post is not intended to bash the current Pharm I prof teaching ANS (who is not Dr. B$). However, I need some advice on how to best approach this class. What resources/ways did people find most helpful as far as learning the material? Thanks in advance for your input guys!

Pharmacology is important as u will use dangerous drugs in real people everyday.
The bat way to memorize it is to link the topic to your future clinicals. Sometimes learning a brief history of the drug is interesting as it may have a quark that will help you memorize it better. Ex: difference in Vancomycin admin in someone with cdiff colitis? Iv form doesn't pass into the gut so it's useless for colitis, must use oral vancomycin.

Also doing board review questions or step questions are a great way to test what seems important enough to ask a question on.

It's a lot of material and a lot of it is mechanisms which is really boring to most people. Study hard and ask for help and u too can earn a Rx Pad one day

Read as much as you can from Pharm Recall, lecture notes etc....

Make your own powerpoint with important facts of drugs.

Learn Classes of drugs, MOA, Side Effects, Contraindications. Even make yourself a practice question of scenarios when you would see this drug be mentioned.

Pharm Recall was $$ for learning.

ANS is the highest yield topic you'll cover between both semesters so make sure you have your receptors down cold (m's, a's, b's etc) as well as their signalling pathways (we had a couple questions involving those on the comp yesterday). Learning the suffix for each drug class goes without saying and it seems a bit daunting at first, but it's medicine. If you wanted easy you should have gone to law school.

I know Dr H can be a bit drab with lecture but his notes are fantastic and the charts he has in them are actually very useful to study. Also, if you haven't used the Kaplan videos make sure to login and watch Dr R go to work. He's a bit quirky (which actually keeps me entertained so I'm inclined to pay more attention) and has a very rational approach to explaining things.
Taked baby. Meet at later bar, day night sometime.

I feel bad for the 4ths. Dr. H is pretty terrible. We had him for cardiovascular this semester and he was useless. His notes were just a bunch of copy & paste from a pharm text. He couldn't answer any questions. I'm sure Dr. B (who is amazing) must have heard a lot of complaining.
I highly recommend Kaplan vids for Pharm. Dr. R is fantastic. His lectures + questions should get your through any pharm exam.
