    Textbooks for a Newcomer

    Advertisements

    Howdy all!

I've heard alot of tips from AUC students about NOT buying textbooks for courses at AUC other than for the anatomy and less so for the genetics course(s). Is this true? And if so, what is the best place to order the book from? Do edition numbers matter?

If not, which books do I need to be extremely successful whilst at AUC? Please provide a list.

*Note: I am trying to be as cost effective as possible, so I don't intend on spending insurmountable amount of money if I can avoid it.

I intend on steaming through my basic sciences back to back starting september until I take time off after 5th semester to study for the USMLE step 1, so any recommendations or must-have textbooks for semester 1-5 is welcome! USMLE study books are also welcome recommendations.

PS: I'd like to thank all of you guys for taking the time and effort to answer our questions regarding AUC as you've all taught me a lot about what to expect when going to a foreign medical school. Thank you.

Anatomy requires the most books, Netters and BRS are pretty essential and I would also recommend Rohen's photographic atlas for the lab test. Books for other courses are not really essential, just for those having trouble tying concepts together. Mark's for biochem is a good example of that, it gives you that bigger picture view that you might not get just from lecture slides, but that starts 2nd semester...the limit of my experience thus far.

Buy books from students in the classified section, you'll see that they are far cheaper and you can likely sell them back later for the same exact price. The library has several copies of the most popular books, if you study in there you can just use them without having to check them out. I bought a bunch of books that I never used because I'd ended up just using the library's copy rather than dragging mine around.

and no one takes summer off, we all do it back to back

And where do I get information regarding these texts? I haven't been given or told anything regarding course requirements etc which is why I started this thread.

Which books do I buy BEFORE heading to the island and which do I buy once ON the island during the 5th semester yard sale?

You can find every single book you need on the island for medical school. The only book I would buy new is your own First Aid for USMLE Step I.

You can often grab good BRS books from Amazon for cheap, get all of the series (Pharm, Path, Biochem, Physiology and Microbiology-Immun), as well as all of the FIRST AID for USMLE Series, 1, 2ck, 2cs.....I would also highly recommend Boards and Wards both pathphys and for the boards.....in addition to the KAPLAN MedEssentials and 2CK, 2CS, Qbooks....that should be enough...Finally, Lipincot's pharmacology and Netter's for Anatomy as well.....

    Good luck !
