Socially awkward AUC student needs advice!

    Advertisements

So after being here 5 semesters, Ive had some ups and downs and tried my best to be social and fit in here in med school so I can make friends and sort of blend in. However, this block of Neuro and Pharm has me very confused.

All through my semesters at AUC, everyone complained about the professors--their slides are never good enough, their lectures are boring, etc. etc. After a few academic struggles I did my best to be like the more successful students (when in Rome, right?).

So to be like them I left my laptop open during class. I alternated between looking at my slides from Notes Service and getting on my laptop and Skyping, messing around on facebook, playing Tetris, or watching pointless videos on youtube. I made sure to leave my laptop in plain view so that everyone could see how little attention I paid, and how cool I was for not paying attention and still getting decent grades.

Oh yeah and after class Id do what everyone else does and be all like, Wow. Dr. _________ was soooooo boring. I could barely stay awake. Or, His/her slides are soooooo disorganized, and all they do is read them in class word for word. Im totally gonna have to re-teach this material to myself after class. Oh and every time tuition went up I was sure to be like, Man, I cant believe were paying $XX,XXX,XXX for an education and they cant hire better professors. Dr. ________ is like, totally, the worst professor ever.

But then something weird happened. Block 3 of Neuro and Pharm rolled around and suddenly all these same people who always complained before started ACTUALLY complaining. I mean, these same people started who passively complained about how the profs were the worst ever and how heroic they were for figuring out the material on their own, these same people started polluting my newsfeed with all sorts of slander aimed at the profs, and many others agreed with these statuses by making similar comments. Students are now talking all through lecture. They are getting up and walking out--like right in the middle of class. And Im not talking one or two, Im talking a steady stream in and out. Its distracting and very unprofessional.

So now Im confused. If everyone was a huge self-studier beforehand, and they are all so super-smart that they never pay attention in lecture, why is everyone freaking out when the Neuro prof forgets to save her .pdf files during lecture? Why are people going nuts on the new Pharm guy? Why arent they just shrugging it off going back to working on getting to a higher level on Tetris?

Could it be that people actually do pay attention in lecture, but for some reason its taboo to act like you rely on a professor explaining material to you? And now one of their major life-lines has been cut and theyre freaking out? Sounds crazy based on what Ive been hearing for 5 semesters straight, but who knows, right?

    So what should I do?

Should I continue trying to be like everyone else and act like Im too cool for school when secretly I am?

Should I just be an adult?

Should I continue posting thinly-veiled sarcasm on valuemd?

    Help!

    No need to complain

Welcome to AUC, if you think it is bad, you should visit other offshore schools, then end up running back to AUC, trust me, it isn't so bad, and actually in many ways better than many LCME type schools, so stop complaining and start studying for your boards
    Good luck !

Here's a better question; why is it that "after 5 semesters here at AUC" you are taking 4th semester classes? Hmm?

Please find me someone who complains about Dr. G and Dr. H for path, Dr. DM for Neuro and Dr. B for Pharm. And then compare their notes and teaching styles to the ones people complain about. There's a big difference. You can't blame the class for wanting high standards in their profs when we are so invested in our education.

Well put. I couldn't have said it better. We complain because we expect more than what we are given.

Do we deserve teachers who just read off their slides?
Do we deserve teachers who brush off questions?
Do we deserve teachers who make slides with one word on it? (i.e. I recall a slide that once said "CALCIUM YES")
Do we deserve teachers who don't make any slides? (of their own)
Do we deserve teachers who make bad questions?

    Don't we deserve better?
    Any LL'ers at AUC represent.

I think some of our professors are worth their weight in gold but there are a few that abuses and hide behind tenure to protect them for their complacency as a professor. What is truly unfortunate is that these are not new complaints. We fill out evaluations at the end of each semester; however, it seems that the students concerns are often ignored.

do we deserve better might not be the question.... Maybe it should be do our patients?

What you're saying may be true, but remember: you're saying it on an anonymous forum. Saying this in person to your peers amounts to blasphemy.
