    Need advice

    Advertisements

Ok, so basically I applied to the big 4 Carib schools and I feel I have a really good shot at them (previous post lists stats). Right now AUC is my first choice, which is why I'm posting here.

I've also been told that my scores are competitive for DO school as well.

The problem is that I want to apply to the carib to start school ASAP to finish in 4 years. If I apply DO, I have to wait till Fall 2012 as opposed to Fall 2011. Even then it's not guaranteed that I'll get in a DO school.

I've been reading quite a bit of literature about matching rates and stuff like that, and basically what I'd like to know is should I wait to apply to DO school for 2012, or should I apply to Carib 4 for 2011?

I figure either way it would portentially be about the same amount of time spent considering it would be 5 years to complete DO, or I go Carib and finish in 4 and if I match, great..if not it would be like an extra year I'd have to wait anyway, right?

Maybe I'm wrong in the last statement, I'm not sure. Any input would be great.

    Thanks.

The Carib is not all its cracked up to be

As it has been said time and time again "The Caribbean should be your last option"

Yes you will have to wait a whole year for DO school but what's 1 year when you will be dedicating your life to medical school + residency +/- fellowship. 1 Year doesn't make a difference if it means going to a school where you will be respected, guided along the way, and given preference over FMGs when it comes to obtaining a residency. Don't feel pressured into your decision and make sure you do all the necessary research into potential DO schools and their requirements (ie - some schools require a recommendation letter from a DO) as well as researching the BIG 4 further. Ultimately the decision is yours and yours alone. I wish you all the best in your endeavors
    Any LL'ers at AUC represent.

Well, a year is kinda a big deal for me since I'll be 28 this year. I'm also trapped in a horrible job as well, so I kinda want to start my medical career.

I'm looking to go into general surgery or IM, from what I understand, those are more "IMG friendly."

How long is the wait to match if you don't make it the first time around? Is it guaranteed the second time applying if the first time is not made?

edit: guess i'll repost on the main forum as well

General surgery is NOT IMG friendly. I was in the same predicament as you back when I considered AUC (and when residencies weren't as difficult to obtain). If I could do it all over again I would have gone DO instead (I was almost certainly guaranteed to get in). If your prospects of getting into a DO school are at least average, I would advise you to wait a year. Your job may suck and you're getting older, but 4 years from now, who knows how competitive residency will be. Even if you don't get into a DO school, at least you can go to AUC knowing that you exhausted your options to stay in the US.
