    No more pre-match?

    NRMP TO IMPLEMENT "ALL-IN" POLICY

At its May 16, 2011 meeting, the NRMP Board of Directors voted unanimously to require programs participating in the Main Residency Match to place all positions in the Match. The so-called "All-In" Policy will become effective for the 2013 Match that opens for registration on September 1, 2012. The policy will affect all PGY-1 positions and PGY-2 positions in advanced programs.

The NRMP will continue to accept comments on implementation of the policy, especially as it relates to possible exceptions for residents who enter training off-cycle, GME programs in rural and geographically underserved areas, combined clinical-research programs, and accelerated programs. Final implementation rules will be adopted in May 2012.

That's a shame. Not sure if it'll help us FMGs or hurt us. A lot of us have to sign outside the match to have a spot but at the same time there are now more spots in the match so we'll see.

Will probably hurt you. The ability to prematch was one of the few things that caribbean students had going for them.

I'm almost positive it's an adverse change because it takes effect the year that i'm in the match. Scientifically proven stuff!

It hurts FMGs, hands down. The ability to prematch was the only advantage FMGs had when it came to the Match.

Sounds like there is still going to be an option to prematch if you go into an underserved area.

if they are making it harder for us to match, they should abolish these ridiculous state approval lists

No, it doesn't mean that at all. It's really only the primary care specialties that pre-match anyway; competitive specialties almost never prematch. And what's ridiculous about state approval lists? No need to be bitter because your school isn't on them all. If you don't like it, go to a better school.

Didn't we have several anestio prematches last match? That ain't primary care is it? Those 2 Opthalm matches we had last match as well - not even sure that residencies like urology and opthalmo use the match at all.

I'm going to assume that "anesteo" means anesthesiology. Odd choice of abbreviation, but whatever. The only anesthesia pre-matches are at Brookdale, part of the same hospital system as Flushing...I'll leave it at that. If you read what I wrote again, I wrote that competitive specialties almost never pre-match, not that they absolutely never do. Urology has its own match and Ophthalmology is part of the SF Match, so not affected by NRMP program changes.

Do yourself a favor and just stop trying to contradict me. You rarely seem to know what you're talking about and you're probably going to be wrong. If you want to comment on basic sciences or something you actually know about, then go right ahead. But if it's something beyond your experience, just read and learn.
