    Transferring to a US school

    It can be done!

Some of you have been asking so I thought I would post a quick write up for what you need to do.

    1) Study hard! The first 2 years of medical school are basically like studying for the step. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Since AUC does not use a 4 point GPA scale, class rank is probably more important. Make sure you are in the top 5%.

    2) Rock the step! (see step 1) You will probably need a 240+ to be safe.

    3) Gather your letters of recommendation. I used Interfolio so I could handle all the letter sending myself. Tutoring a professor's class is a great way to get a glowing letter of recommendation. Some schools also require undergraduate letters... so have your professors send modified med school letters to whatever service you will use to aggregate your letters.

    4) Dean's Letter. Basically its just a letter stating you're in good standing. It also gives your class rank and a quick run down of your academic career thus far. You email Mrs. B in the dean's office and ask her (politely) to send a letter to the address you provide. They only send out mail on Fridays, so its imperative you get this done early.

    5) Schools require your Step 1, Med GPA, MCAT, Undergrad GPA, Dean's letter, and an interview if you pass all the screens. Many school websites say they don't mind receiving your step score after the deadline... but you should have yours in BEFORE the deadline. At my interview the admissions director said she tossed out any application without a step 1 score by 2 weeks after the deadline. Keep in mind it takes up to a month for a school to get your step score since you have to snail mail it. *NEOUCOM does give interviews to people who submit their step scores even a month after their initial application deadline*

    6) The application itself should be self-explanatory. Some schools will email you the application at your request, some require you mail it in, and some you can do it online.

    7) Interview, I only attended 1 interview (and am withdrawing from all others) but it was very relaxed at SUNY Upstate. I have heard horror stories about other schools. NEOUCOM has a clinical interview portion, Drexel they ask difficult questions and put you in a stressful situation. Again, this is all word of mouth.

The 6 Schools that as of 5/10/11 still take international transfers are:
Rosalind Franklin University - June 15th Deadline
New York Medical College - No openings, not sure of the deadline
SUNY Upstate - April 1st Deadline
SUNY Buffalo - Ask at the end of May if they have openings. Didn't have openings this year.
    NEOUCOM - April 1st Deadline
    Drexel - May 15th Deadline

Keep in mind many years there are no openings. There might be other schools that take transfer, but those are the 6 I was able to dig up.

If you look closely at the timing... it basically indicates that you must take the step in mid/late Feb in order to have all your materials in by the earliest deadlines. It also means that Fall/Winter semester students will have to start rotations because the grace period for loans is 6 months from the end of the semester.

It will be especially hard for Fall semester students to transfer without either rushing the step or taking a year off/repeating 3rd year.

If you have questions feel free to skype me (Aphtalyfe) or ask here.

    Good luck!

And on a less serious note, almost everyone else's (in your cohort) Class Rank just jumped up by one position.
