    Car or Quad?

    Advertisements

So I just started here at AUC and my wife and I are trying to figure out if its worth buying a car or a quad. We've only been here about a week but so far we both feel like we're gonna want something to get around and do shopping trips. If we do a car, I think I'd prefer a jeep or something bigger, since I'm kind of a big guy.

    Any ideas or advice?

I'd suggest a car of some sort, not that it wouldn't be fun to have a quad, the sudden rainstorms would potentially suck. There's lots of Jeeps to be had that can simulate the quad experience.

Jeeps are usually sell at a premium on the island, but if you have the cash, you should definitely spring for one. You'll enjoy it much more than those $2000 beater cars that most students have. Plus when you sell it, I'm sure the demand will still be there, so you'd have gotten to drive a decent car for two years with minimal depreciation. If you can't find a jeep, I would just go with a car (but unfortunately for us bigger people, there will not be many full-size sedans)

Quads and scooters really only make sense as a second vehicle. They are fun to drive, can avoid traffic (which is priceless in tourist season), and are much cheaper to fill with fuel, but they are useless for carrying loads or in the rain.

side x side. Best of both worlds....
I had a quad and loved every minute. In my 2 years on the island I got stuck 2x in the rain. I also had a car, but used it rarely. If I had to do it again I would try to find a used side x side.

I had a scooter only and loved it, no regrets. It's the (Canadian) dream...to live on a tropical island and drive a scooter....somewhere between the extremely hard work and necessary dedication, it was very soulful and free to roll out to the French side, or down to Maho, or even just down to Mullet Bay for a swim before dinner (done nearly nightly before shark feeding time of course!). I did get caught in the rain by times, but not that often, and usually a welcome refresh to the constant drab and boring sunny days. The rain was welcome.
For a large grocery trip to grand marche or cost u less it was not useful, but a car rental between a few people is cheep, or go with a friend and chip 5 for gas. In the whole (nearly) 2 years, I may have spent 100 dollars on gas, that's a bold estimate. Routine grocery trips to Maho were a breeze and a nice trip after class...backpack and underseat storage with a hook for grocery bags to hang from and a flat foot board for case of coke or beer, no problem. How I miss those days now about to finish residency in Canada.
Good luck with you decision and enjoy the island, it's a life experience that many will never have. I would do it again in a second. Cheers.

I had a QUAD on the island (should still be owned by an AUC'er) White Kawasaki Bayou 250. BEST PURCHASE EVER!

But I'm a single guy so that might be different since you have a wife.

If I can offer you solid advice regarding a vehicle. You or your Wife go back to the US (Miami preferably), Buy a used car for like 2-4k, ship it down for 2-3k, and use it.

No island vehicles are reliable if they have been passed from student to student, trust me. Plus chances are you will get all/most of your money back if you sell it when you leave.

Defiantly get a car! And no you don't really need a jeep or a 4x4, the golf course flooding is not that bad and times it is, you can just go the french way.
