transferring to a US med school?

I realize it is very difficult to do but I was just wondering if anyone is going for it right now? Or you hear any stories about successful transfers?

I know of a few students who have transferred. They either had great (usually family) connections, Step I scores >255, or both.

Which schools are still taking people? I tried myself 4 years ago (240 step 1, #4 in class, no connections) and got zero interest.

I was wondering how you got the timing right... I realize its usually easier to get accepted when applying for the 3rd year so when do you send your applications? The moment you get your step 1 scores? do you start the process beforehand?

Also if you don't mind me asking, what kind of grades did you have at AUC. If you maintain an average of an 85 let's say... is that good enough?

know of two people that have done it. I think it was the new york school (SUNY) and one in Ohio, but forgot which ones. One guy eventually ended up in Derm, and the other in rads i think. However, both had to repeat 2nd year of med school since those were the available spots (its rare for med students to drop out in their clinical years). Neither one of these people had family connections, but both had good step I scores (235+) which at the time was more difficult to get (review sources for the steps have improved greatly since), and had very good grades on the island and faculty recommendations.

If you want a , radiological, optho, derm, and to a point ER, and surgery, and will not be happy with anything else, then it is a worth a shot. However, you have to also remember that the competition for the empty med school seat maybe even tougher than that for a residency, and even a transfer is no guarantee of that residency as even AMG's are often forced to apply for a backup in IM or FM.

The timing depends on when you sit for the step and when the school's deadlines are.

There are 2 blogs written by people who transferred successfully. Google should pop them up
