    Timeline

Hey guys, sorry if this has been posted before but I ran multiple searches and couldn't find specifically what I was looking for.

I'm wondering about the timeline for when we leave the island - I know when people take the USMLE varies, but am more curious about when we actually start rotations? I had heard that NUMC only starts in the fall (though I haven't really gotten a straight answer on this), and am wondering if someone leaving the island in December would still be able to do clinicals there.

    Thanks much!

It is usually the May class that has a "lock" on NUMC and Providence because they leave in December, have a lot of time to study for the Step, and can leisurely start clinicals when they want. Providence has 16 + 6, the first 16 start July 4th and the second 6 start about Aug 1, but this can vary from year to year. NUMC has 32 slots that start Aug 1. OCSA will be visiting shortly so you can ask them again, but this was the information I got from them when they were here last semester. If, however, you don't want to wait until Aug 1, then you will end up somewhere else. If you do any core rotations, then you can't "move over" to NUMC or Providence to finish the ones you don't have. That is kinda stinky, but that is what I was told.

Correct, NUMC only starts August 1st and has 32 slots. Note, this date is moved up from previous years. Usually it starts toward the end of August. Yes, if you left the island in December you could do your stuff at NUMC, but you couldn't start until August 1st. You could do family medicine and maybe a couple of other rotations, but you could not do ANY CORE rotations or you would be ineligible for NUMC. I know you may think it stinks that you can't do a core or 2 somewhere else and then finish at NUMC, but if they let you do that then AUC wouldn't have those core slots at NUMC. It is a popular location precisely because of the ability to do all of your cores in one place. Out of the 32 slots about half are from the September class and the other half primarily from the May class. Note, that if you are in the May class and want to do your cores at NUMC, be very careful about your financial aid stuff. You only have 4 1/2 semesters of financial aid for clinicals and cores will eat up 3 of those semesters. Some have gotten in trouble because they used another semester of financial aid prior to starting cores but took it easy and only did the minimum number of weeks in that semester. So, they basically used a full semester of financial aid for a half semester of rotations. That will come into play after you finish cores and still have several rotations to finish, but only have half a semester of financial aid. So, if you are going to finish in December, take step and want to come to NUMC, either don't do anything before starting there, or make sure you do a full semester worth of rotations. This way, once you finish cores, you will only have a rotation or 2 left and you will be covered by the half-semester of financial aid you have left.
