Been Accepted, still not sure whether to go

    Advertisements

Hi all. I have been accepted to AUC for Jan 2011. I have a 3.40 GPA and got 23P on my mcat. I havent tried to apply to US schools partly because I dont think I will be competitive but also because I am anxious to start med school in January as opposed to later. I am a hard worker and know that I can do well in Med school. I am also open to Family practice or IM.
The match results for 2011 scared me and made me think that in 4 yrs from now, even a 250 on the steps may not be enough from someone from the caribbean to make it into residency.
    Any thoughts ? Anyone ?

With a 23 MCAT, you're not going to get into a US school. Study hard and get a 29/30 and you should be able to find a DO school that will accept you. If the MCAT doesn't go well, or you don't get into a DO school, come down to AUC, but only if you still really want to be a doctor. The match is getting harder every year, so if you are unable to get a residency, you'll be sitting on 300k debt with no real way to pay it off. Good Luck.

Thanks for the feedback. I dont want to be a DO. I really want to be an MD and I am willing to take the chance but it is scary putting in all that hard work and having nothing to show for it at the end...except a mountain of debt.

DO w/ residency > MD w/o residency. It may take you longer to get there, but it's a much safer path. If you really don't want to be a DO (or you really can't wait another year or two), just come on down to AUC. The sooner you start, the sooner you'll get to residency.

If you're willing to re-take the MCAT, I'd strongly advise you study harder, re-take it, and get into a US allo school. Everyone always wants to start sooner (I know I sure did), but in the end, a few months or an extra year is trivial. I wish I could go back to your position and take an extra few months and get into a US school. If you don't, I promise you'll wish you did. Please trust me...I've been where you currently are, and I am where you want to be. Because I went to a caribbean school, I'll be spending an extra year anyway if I re-apply to emergency med!

As far as the DO route goes, I NEVER would have considered it a few years ago either. However, they're just about as easy to get into as the better caribbean schools, so you can likely get in with your current MCAT score. And, for reasons that are beyond me, many program directors look at them as higher than caribbean schools. It's absolutely inane, but I can promise you that it's true! DO's will get more interviews than the same caribbean applicant, and have a better chance at matching. In the end, as georgelucas said, a DO with a job (or the job they want), beats an MD without the job they want every time. If I were a DO, I'd currently be an EM resident, plain and simple.

All this said, if you do decide to come to AUC right away (which is not what I think you should do), you shouldn't have too much trouble landing a FM or IM spot. They may exist, but I'm not aware of anyone who applied for a primary care specialty, were reasonably willing to travel, and didn't match somewhere. Most people I know going into primary care actually got either their first or second choice!

If you're coming to AUC or any other Carib schools and the thought of ending up as a FM or IM physician scares you than please do not go there. If you come down here with the purpose of becoming a doctor whatever specialty it may be than you should consider carib school and enroll ASAP. You already know that US school doors are shut to you unless your retake the MCAT. If you are a US resident/citizen and are able to pass the steps with reasonable scores 80+ on both steps your chances of matching are still very good.
