    Caribbean medical school info..

    Advertisements

Hello everyone, I just joined Value MD. I have several questions regarding Carib. medical schools. I am getting ready to apply to medical school in Texas this May for the 2012 cycle. My GPA is 3.87 but I cant seem to get a good score in the MCAT practice exams. Currently I am going research for the university where I attend. I have done many volunteer work at a hospital and I am the Vice president of the medical organization here on campus. My mcat test day is April 16th. I am seriously considering medical school in the Caribbean because i feel like Texas med schools are far beyond my reach due to the mcat.

I have been looking at AUC in depth and it seems pretty legit..
I would like to get any feedback on this regarding residency placements in the US and clinical clerkships as well. My goal is to get into General Surgery or Orthopedics. Any information on any caribbean medical school would be greatly appreciated.

There are so many med schools down there that it is hard for me to decide which one to apply to.

    Thanks,...

    Oof.

If you look in the "what are my chances" thread you'll see that generally you need a 20+ for a "big 3" caribbean school. You have a great GPA, you have a chance at getting into a US school, aim high and get back to studying!

Honestly, If you score that on the real MCAT, even AUC will most likely not be an option for you. AUC is getting more and more competitive and I would venture that you need to be in the upper 20's at least to get in. Sorry for this news, but you since you have not taken the exam, you can improve your chances. I would take a Kaplan course or something else and try to get your score up so that you can get in to a school

I wouldve given my left foot for your GPA when I was applying in tx in 2005. The fact remains that you need a 28+ mcat to get accepted in tx, even at TCOM. This is especially true if you aren't an underrepresented minority. I would cancel the mcat, find some way to scrape together $1500 for kaplan and pray for a 25. If you bomb

I would invest some serious time in Kaplan exam prep and then reschedule the MCAT, if you've got the slightest chance to get into a US med school, go after it before you decide to come to any Carib schools.

I agree, especially after the NRMP boasts 38,000 physicians applying for 26,000 slots in the 2011 US Match

"Main Residency Match The 2011 Main Resdency Match was the largest in NRMP history, with more than 26,000 positions and almost 38,000 applicants. Read the Match Day press release; view the Advance Data Tables; and listen to the podcast from NRMP Executive Director ." National Resident Matching Program

True, there was a record number of participants in the match, but that doesn't mean it was more competitive than last year.

The match only had an increase of 179 applicants from 2010 to 2011, yet there was an increase of 612 positions offered for PGY-1.

There are lots of people on here that talk about match getting more competitive every year, US schools are opening up, soon we'll all be out of a job, blah blah blah. The idea of "research" shouldn't be such a foreign concept to a bunch of future docs...I mean taxi dirvers/janitors.

Oh and let me add the obligatory VMD rule people love to point out: "Posting full names is a TOS violation!!!!!!"
