    Playground

    Advertisements

Where did the playground go? I came by earlier this week and it was gone without warning. I didn't like the answer I was given, but wondering who may know the real story. Anyone know?

I don't have any answers either but it ticks me off. It was a nice place for the spouses with kids. Rumor is they also plan on moving/tearing down the gazebos.

That would make sense because they are constructing the new building over that area including the gazebos and the "faculty parking lot".

Hopefully they just plan on relocating it because, I agree, that was a great place for spouses and the little ones. I remember meeting my wife and son there for some quick quality time in between studying. That would be VERY inconsiderate of them if they didn't just plan to move it somewhere else.

Dr. Rotunda told me that it was removed because it looked "unprofessional", despite the fact that the school did not pay for it to begin with. It was originally provided by funds from the Spouse's Org. Also, the Spouse's Org wasn't notified in advance - it just disappeared. So, what is more unprofessional - having a place for the kids to play because students have families too, or an extra patch of grass that will only be mowed once every 6 weeks?

Strange. The playground is a major focal point in the AUC literature about how "kid friendly" the island is. It's really one of the only playgrounds on the dutch side.

I wouldn't doubt it at all. This is coming from the same administration that refused for the Honor Society to hold a carwash on campus FOR CHARITY on the lot near the basketball court because "the soap suds on the pavement would look 'UNPROFESSIONAL'".

Did it matter that all the proceeds were going toward charity? NO
Did it matter that that lot is located in the back of the school and no-one outside of the AUC community will see it? NO
Did it matter that the rest of the island (Dutch side anyway) looks like trash? NO

I guess there are somethings that we need to give up in the name of "professionalism." First things to go are obviously giving to charity and providing a safe play area for the children.

The sales talks must have fired up again. Expect to see guys in suits walking through any time now.

I also expect AUC to call every pediatrician in the United States to have all toys removed from their offices. Its UNPROFESSIONAL. As if the cracks all over the floors all over the campus are professional. Or the shoddy paint job on the stucco (anyone who has had a stucco house knows about the hellish maintenance involved). Ok stopping now before I get UNPROFESSIONAL.

What's unprofessional is telling students that they've lost clinical spots the day they show up for the rotation, not communicating with affiliated hospitals, not backing their own students when there are clinical problems, not having enough seating in lecture halls, largely ignoring student concerns, etc. Some childrens' plaything should really be the least of their concerns.

It's not as much about the playground itself as it is about the symbolism of the action. It leads me to believe that the institution could give a damn about their students and their families. So, to someone who may not have a family, I can see how trivial this may seem, but it isn't exactly prudent to minimize the symbolism itself. You have this way of always coming across as if you think your opinion is far more important than everyone else's and that everyone else is just too stupid to understand the simple logistics of these things. I'm not attacking your character. Rather, I'm just making an observation about how you come across. You may not have meant anything by your post, but it appeared to be pseudo-rude.
