Doyou guys generally hear a lot of negativity towards your Caribbean school decision?

    Advertisements

Mainly from pre-meds or med students/residents. The thing about hearing or reading comments from U.S. med students saying that Carib grads need to get a 250+ Step score to get the worst residency possible or they should never think outside of family practice(not that this is a bad specialty, but I understand not everyone wants to be a FP) kinda makes me a bit queasy when mentioning where I go to school. Luckily, with everyone that has asked where I go to med school, I haven't heard any negativity towards me specifically. Currently in rotations, most people know I'm a med student(or ask, wondering why someone so young is examining them >__>) and don't question further. The only ones that know I'm a Carib student are the attendings, which definitely don't seem to care and treat me as a regular student. But, I do hear people in general talking about Carib students this way, and thinking in silence they probably think the same about me if I was to mention it.

I'm in a program that is by far majority US grads, and I have never heard a negative comment about where I went to medical school. The extent is people being honest, "well if you wanted to get into ____, you really need to do well on boards". What I have found is that people tend to overcompensate the other way as to not come off as offensive. They say things like "oh that's cool" or "did you study on the beach?". What they say behind my back, I don't know. But be a good resident and they'll have no ammo. Caribbean grads have the reputation of being lazy sometimes, so don't be lazy.

I've seen some pretty lazy US grads too. I guess laziness doesn't discriminate.

I haven't heard anything said negative about me being from a caribbean school, but it has absolutely affected me negatively in the match! Despite honoring the rotation and getting a letter of rec from them, Hopkins wouldn't even interview me because they won't interview caribbean grads and on one of my interviews, the guy said that I looked very well qualified and had great letters, but the only thing he'd be worried about is that I'm from a caribbean school. Also, I got a total of 2 interviews for EM, and probably because I knew people, while people with the same or lower scores than me from the US had 15-20 interviews. So people may not say anything to your face, but you can be pretty sure they're thinking it.

Not gonna lie though, I can understand where it comes from as I've been guilty of thinking negatively of students who come from carib schools without 50 state approval. I'm not sure if I'd interview people from AUA or SMU if I were a PD.

I can see why you're frustrated... but it IS Hopkins. They aren't exactly hurting for applicants, and they can select the cream of the crop as far as credentials are concerned. No matter how we slice it, Ivy League Undergrad + Stanford (or wherever) Medical >>> Anyplace Undergrad + Caribbean Medical.
