    Dorm Elevator Stories

    Advertisements

So I thought I'd share about the AUC Dormitory Elevator, I have only used the one that is closest to the school, near the gym, as my dorm room is closest to it, so that is the one I am referring to.

Last semester, the great A.L. (AUC's #1 student) got stuck in there for 45 minutes on a Saturday night. He called me from inside, thank goodness he had his cell phone on him as the alarm button alerts no one, and I ran over to the guard shack, and the guard proceeded to dial a bunch of numbers that nobody picked up. He eventually called one of the AUC maintenance workers who drove over from a party with his daughter in the car, (she looked extremely unhappy), and he opened the elevator closet (which was unlocked) and simply turned off the elevator for a whole minute, and then turned it back on. I saw him turn the switch. It was a big round knob that had 2 settings: ON and OFF

A.L. was scared poopless that the elevator would drop (he was stuck between the 4th and 5th floors) and he would come crashing down.

After the reboot, it worked fine. So, as a precaution, never ride the elevator without a cell phone.

Today at the 1st semester sale, an Islander came over to buy some stuff. I chatted with him and found out that he was an elevator mechanic from Egypt. I bragged about how we have one of the worst elevators in the world, and that it is super slow, and that maybe he could take a look at it. He asked me which brand it was, or which company services it. I said it is unidentifiable by any means and that I don't think we have a service company for it. I took him over to it for a quick look. We went up to my dorm room to sell him some more items, and during the elevator ride he said that it was approximately going 1.2 meters per second. He said it was pretty slow, and he told us about how he worked on really fast elevators in Dubai. He worked on one that goes 8m/s, but he was really enthusiastic when he told me about the fastest elevator that goes 12m/s, but people need to sign a waiver before riding it; it can be hazardous to your health if you have a heart condition, and the pressure change can cause headaches.

I asked him if he could do anything to improve the speed of the dorm elevator but he said you can't because its set by the RAM (not sure if he meant computer ram or something else).

Here's to hoping the school gets a new one installed, prolly will never happen.

I could tell you about my experience in the elevators (the one furthest from the school to be exact), but this video sums it up nicely:
