Starting in Jan. 2011...possible to match in 2014?

    Advertisements

hey guys, i was just sitting down and trying to calculate if it is a possibility that i can start in Jan. 2011 and match in the 2014 matches. Lets assume i do not repeat any courses and take off only about 2-4 months for the Step 1 prep. Is it a possibility? Can someone usually complete the 72 weeks of rotations in precisely 72 weeks or does it take up an extra few months? Thanks for the help guys

I think the general consensus is that its possible, but unlikely.

You could probably only take off 1-2 months for step prep instead of 2-4. There are some on here who have done it, hopefully they will chime in.

I know of at least one who has done it, a fairly regular poster on VMD, and he took his Step 1-2 WEEKS after leaving the island.

You really will be quite cramped for time, but it is possible. And it will be tough to get your pick of clinical sites - you may just have to take what's available - and if that means UK or NYC (with long, annoying commutes) then that's what it will have to be.

well I would think that by rushing the step 1 ... you're risking your chances at residency. A low score / failed attempt at any steps forever hampers your chance of a residency, especially considering how competitive things are getting. So be careful ! You don't want to risk your entire career only cause u wanted to save one year, because frankly speaking that's foolish.

Also, correct me if I am wrong but doing cores back to back means you will have absolutely no time to study for step 2? So factor in the long commutes to hospitals during your clinical rotations, no breaks whatsoever.... how would you have enough time to study for your step 2ck?

Students have done it in the past, but 3-4 years from now, remember that it will be a very different atmosphere.

On another note, if someone knows whether if you start in January do you have time to write and study for your step 3?

I am from another school, from Ross to be exact, I started in Jan 2007 and matched in 2010. I am in Residency right now, and the 4 year mark since started med school is comming this January. I took step 1, 3 weeks after I finished the 5th semester and step 2 just 6 months after I started clinicals, without peds, surg and psych and no problem, got 96 , just studying from the kaplan books, first aid and uworld.

i hope you are not suggesting that this is a typical thing or that the typical student can accomplish that schedule...

It is possible to do, and I'm pretty sure BiologyBY did just that, but it's relatively rare.

You are not necessarily rushing to take the step by taking it soon after leaving the island, if you prepared properly in basic sciences. If you slack off 5th semester, and just try and get by for the other 4, you're not going to be ready when you leave the island. But, if you study hard for 2 years in basic sciences, it's certainly reasonable to take the step right after leaving the island. Someone else who posts on here did that, and got >260.

You must start clinicals by Oct 25. You go off island in mid August. You have to take Step 1 and get your scores (count three weeks for scores) and schedule into something available. You will only be eligible for Oct start dates and there may be people waiting on certain entrance dates from previous classes (slots are first come first serve by passing STEP score).

    So
basically you have to take Step 1 withing 2 weeks of leaving the island and be willing to go anywhere including the UK to meet the start date. Once you start then you have a little cushion to finish but the start day is the key criteria for residency class because it determines when you can get your diploma by (the one prereq other than Step 2s and core boards etc).

And the 25th may change, that is the date for 2011 for 2013 residency.
