More questions about SXM Rental properties

    Advertisements

    Hi Gang,
For all of you that have spent or are spending time in Sint Maarten:
I'm coming down at the end of July or first week of August to secure someplace to lay my weary head, and since I'm coming with the bare necessities (clothes, books, X-box ), I'd like to get a feel for what most "furnished" apartments/homes come with. I presume that some of them are like hotel rooms where everything is provided (silverware, linens, etc), whereas others are completely bare. If anyone could respond with what their apartments came with, it would be tremendously helpful. Here's my wishlist for a 2 bedroom/1 bath unit (lemme know if its feasible!):

2 beds (full-size), dressers, desk, kitchen table, microwave, oven, utensils, silverware, linens, washer & dryer, television, DSL access...

    That's all for now. Thanks!

    Aloha,

My family and I were able to find a apt in two days and purchase a car the following day. The housing office provides a list as a starting poit but don'e expect it to be up to date. 95% of the hunting will be on your own, at least it was for us. Plz check your private email. Dan

    apartments

    Jon -

Most (MOST, but not ALL!) apartments will have those things you have written in your posting. Except for the dryer. It is NOT common to find a place with a dryer, but there are some apartments for a bit more money monthly where you may have a dryer (not to mention that utilities are high here, so a dryer may be hard on the wallet). For a two bedroom near the school, you will probably pay about $1500/mo, and I suggest the Tradewinds. They are more spacious, older (been through several hurricanes and still standing), and not a bad place to rent at all. For more money, the Cupecoy Beach Club units are very nice. They are equipped with everything, and have a nice swimming pool etc. Tradewinds has a pool as well. I REALLY recommend you come and spend 2 nights or so in a hotel to find the right apartment for you. It has alot to do with personal preference and what you want to spend. If you get a car soon enough, you can go a bit farther from the school and find an apartment you like in, say, Pelican Key or Beacon Hill areas. I have some numbers for you, if you like. Email me. Maybe you can make a few calls from home or at least call these places when you arrive. I have heard a few negative things lately about some places, but I wont display them here. PM me if you like.

    "The power of X"

X-box? Do I smell a Frag fest? Party at Jon's place!

I remember on SDN that someone asked about bring his Gamecube and/or PS2 to the Caribbean and got criticized by one person for not taking med school seriously enough. I thought it was hilarious the first time I saw it.

    Some people...

...need to lighten up. Life is about balance (at least if you're going to enjoy it!). Work hard, play hard. It's healthy. If people know themselves well enough to know that they are easily distracted and can't focus on studying when it counts, then they should remove themselves from distracting situations (video games, casinos, etc...), although on SXM, I gather that this can be difficult. It's really an indivdual choice! My $0.02, for what it's worth.....

    Apartment ideas

Hey Jon! I am starting in September as well and I want the same type of apartment myself. I have pets, so I will have to live somewhere that allows them. When were you planning on going down there to look? I think I am going down in the beginning of July, so if I go before you I will be happy to let you know what I find!

    In Head-first!

    Lynsey,
The first time I step foot on the island will be at the end of July, sight-unseen . dc79md turned me onto this link, in case you're interested:

According to several people, a couple of days should be sufficient to find an apartment to suit you. I presume I'll still be looking when you arrive, though! I've checked out a bunch of Sint Maarten real estate pages, but julestx may also be able to give us some leads on apartments allowing pets as August draws closer. I have no idea how long it will take me to get reconnected to the outside world (internet, cell phone, etc.) once I get there, but I'll be happy to share any information I have with you.
    Aloha,
