    Comp and Shelf exams

    Advertisements

I was wondering if the comps were curved similar to the shelf exams or is it just the raw score? Also, do the pharm and behavioral shelf exams have 2 curves like MCB did (national and school curve)? Thanks.

they usually set the passing score at a certain two digit nbme score. i think the passing score on the comp is 62, which is not that high. no one really knows what they mean exactly, but i can tell you higher is better.

With regards to shelves, I believe they go 2 standard deviations below the mean for the fail cutoff and 2 standard deviations above the mean for honor cutoff. The bad part is that it makes it difficult to honor, the tradeoff is that it is just as difficult to fail (although not impossible, so it is important to study for them). I believe that is why we see different cutoffs numbers for each discipline. I am not sure how the comps were scored as I was always worried at the time about how it compared to projected step 1 scores. I do have to say that I thought the Ob/Gyn shelf to be the most difficult as it was the only shelf where I asked, "What the *&^% are they talking about" on certain questions. Psych was a lot of reading and I found it best to look at the question and then read the stem as some questions had nothing to do with the vignette.
