    AUC reputation?

    Advertisements

is it a problem at all? I don't mean with residency directors or attendings, but with patients and friends not in medicine. I can see a person hearing St. xyz school of medicine and passing it off without question. But what does an auc grad say? "American?" "American U."? Or American University of the Caribbean?

I've never met a layperson who's familiar with auc's rep, and I can sort of see them hearing "Caribbean" and immediately making negative associations as a result. Is this the case at all?

I actually tell people "American University of the Caribbean" and then explain that I did the basic sciences in the caribbean and the clinicals here in New York. As a clinical student, I have never had any complaints

most people i've mentioned the school name to, who aren't familiar with the school or Caribbean schools period, find the name to be akward.

like the OP said, most expect a Caribbean school name to be St. Xyz. Ross & St. George's are also the most well known.

    But American University....of the Caribbean?

I can't count the number of times people mixed up the school and its location

Friend: "Yea, he's going to St. Maarten medical school"
    Me: "No, it's AUC"
    Friend: "AUC??"
Me: "Yea, American University of the Caribbean. It's located on the island of St. Maarten"
    Friend: "Oh, right "
    Me:

They should've named the school American University of St. Maarten or "Founder's Name" School of Medicine

Once you get to the point where you put on a white coat, listen to the breath sounds of your patients, get called Doctor, and actually understand what you are doing, you and virtually everyone around you including the attendings, interns and patients wont care if you go to AUC or XYZ.

During basic sciences, its different for some reason, probably because people don't see you in the role as a doctor and instead are going by what they know about medical education, which probably isn't very much.

For me, I've actually gotten nothing but positive responses when I tell people I go to medical school here. Pre-med students or US med students might say or think someone since they think that caribbean students are somehow inferior. But, just about anyone else i've told (most people know very little about medicine, more or less medical education) think it must have been my first choice. According to them, who wouldn't want to go to medical school on a tropical island!

Conversation usually goes something like this:
random person: So why did you pick St Maarten for school?
me: Well, I didn't get into U of MD.....
random person: (cutting me off)...right, and who wouldn't want to go school in Paradise!

I just let them think that
