Do people get "honors" at AUC and still fail the boards?

    Advertisements

Haven't seen this topic discussed before.

I'm just curious if there are people who do great in class (honors) yet horrible on the USMLE. Since AUC is composed of many who had great undergraduate GPAs, but did less than average on the MCAT, I would think this would be a distinct possibility.

You'll hear about some. But, you have to recall that the grades necessary for honor society vary semester by semester. And, some people are exceptional at studying exam to exam without reviewing/integrating old material.

As long as you use the commonly accepted sources such as First Aid, BRS, other review books, and a few qbanks to round out and maintain your knowledge, you should be fine on boards.

According to the statistics (ask Dr. B from MCB), it's almost impossible to fail the step if you're making deans list. If you're making a 75 or less, I think about half the people fail on their first try.

I mentioned this in another post...very few of my friends in the past few terms left with over an 80 % gpa. They all scored well on the boards. I don't know when the last time AUC conducted a statistical analysis was, but there is no question the quality of students is a lot better here now.

I think that more than anything, putting time in during 5th is the greatest indicator of passing the step. This theory can't exactly be measured, but everyone I know regardless of gpa who took 5th seriously and hauled passed and passed well.

I don't know if I'd talk badly about sleepy asian after hearing his story. If he decides to put C4 in your bedroom....it just better not blast through the wall!

usually speaking, one who do well the 1st 2 yrs will pass the board, with what score, that is to be determined.

however there are cases where ppl with A avg the 1st 2 yrs and didnt do so well on usmle 1, why? bc perhpas they got too confident and decided to study less and reveiw less for the usmle, thus the poor performance.

while someone with a C avg, did better on usmle with the A avg, bc the person put in more work and review.
