I spent my first two years at a community college and transfered with a science GPA of 3.88. The last two years I have gotten a number of D's and C's which has brought my GPA down. I also have a year of volunteer work in a hospital, a year of research and spent 4 years in the US Army. I am just wondering if I should spend another year longer studying for the MCAT, taking additional classes to boost my GPA etc.. I know I could have gotten a fantastic GPA if I would have gone to a no-name college and did an easy major but with that low of a GPA, I don't know if they will take that into account. Any advice as soon as possible would be most appreciative!
Well, your GPA is the right range, it'll depend greatly on your MCAT I believe. Generally admissions likes to see an UPWARD trend, especially when going from community college to a university. Yours went the other way.

Make sure to nail the MCAT, your extracurriculars seem fine. Also write a great personal statement (and try to not use to the excuse that going to a no-name college would have given you a better GPA, that is not something admissions people want to see), and get great LORs. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the valuable info! So you do you think I should spend a few more quarters trying to boost my GPA before applying or should I just take the Kaplan course and start studying for the MCAT? My GPA at the University is 2.54 and my GPA at the community college was 3.8.

It's hard to say how the admissions committee is going to look at your GPA and I wouldn't plan your future around anything that anyone on here tells you, we can only tell you what we think.

That being said, your cum GPA is right around AUC's average, but your university GPA is low. I don't think it's going to look good that you only did well in community college and your trend is going in the wrong direction. Usually, people do poorly at first and then improve, not do well, transfer to a good school, and then get bad grades. I'm not saying this is true, but it looks as though you couldn't handle a more difficult courseload, and your comment that you could have done better at a no-name school makes it sound that way even more. If you can't handle undergrad, you're probably going to have a hell of a time in med school!

As far as if you should take another year or not...that's up to you. Personally, I'd probably study my *** off for the MCAT, get a good score to show them that I can handle the work, and apply. Worse thing that can happen is they say no and you can try again after taking some more course work. And even if they do say no because of your GPA, if you get a good MCAT, you can still use it for 4 years, so it wasn't a waste.

Chances are very good. I got in with about the same GPA and a 27 MCAT, so you should be fine.

Could someone tell me my chances of getting into AUC? I have a B.S. in Computer Science with minor in Mathematics from a 4-year university. My GPA there was 3.9. After graduating and working in the field, I decided I would prefer a career in medicine. I needed to continue to work full-time, so my only option for pre-med classes was in the evenings at a Community College. My science GPA is 3.5. I have not yet taken the MCAT but plan on doing so in July. I had no time for volunteering/shadowing so far (working 40 hours and going to school 4 nights a week most of the time) but plan on volunteering during this summer and possibly the fall also. Also, AUC asks for a letter from a pre-med advisor, and there isn't one at my school...however my science professors speak very highly of me and will submit letters of recommendation.

Could someone please offer any advice?

Take the MCAT, apply to US schools first. If those should fail, if you score decently on the MCATs and aren't a complete lunatic with a long rap sheet, I think you stand a good chance.

Maybe it should be added to the initial post in this thread that without MCAT scores, there is really no point in asking "what are my chances"! There is absoultely no way to even try to guess at your chances if you haven't taken the MCAT.

If you have a 3.5 and 30 MCAT, you can probably get into the US. If you have a 3.5 and a 24 MCAT, you won't get into a US school but would have a good shot at AUC. If you have a 3.5 and a 19 MCAT, you'd be lucky to get into AUC. So, no point asking without an MCAT score.

Also, are no prospective students seeing a trend here? I'll answer "what are my chances" questions with as best a guess as I can give since I remember asking the same thing when I started posting, and it made me feel better when people said I had a good shot. However, everytime anyone answers on here, it's always just based on if you're close to AUC's averages...which are posted on the first thread. The thought process is exactly this, "are they around or above the average? Yup...they've got a good chance."

If you have at least a 3.2 GPA and somewhere in the mid 20's MCAT....you have a good chance.
