Crime is getting worse... Safety is a huge concern!!!

    Advertisements

Last night/early this morning, a student's apartment (that lives close to the school) was busted into by someone. The student was severely beaten and robbed, (a few details left out for the privacy of the student). This was not just some random crime of "petty thief". This was a vicious attack on the student. The student was taken to the hospital. Detectives have met with the one beaten, but seem to be unconcerned with details and finding out who did this! PLEASE USE EXTRA CAUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This situation is getting out of control.

    AUC Concerns.........

    Hey,

I'm starting AUC in the Fall (2006). I have become really concerned about the crime there after reading all posts by current and former students. Would you still recommed the school to prospective students?

Also, is this a current SPIKE in crime or is this the norm?

There have been incidents, yes. Though lately for some reason there seem to be more than last year. Still though, yes.. St. Maarten is still probably no more dangerous than most large cities in the US. And certainly beats the hell out of places like Belize.

Be careful what is posted on this thread...

It is only human nature for people to be curious! However, if you know the person and/or have details, please be careful in posting them. Out of respect to the victim, you don't want to post things that others will be able to identify who it is.

While this is certainly true, I think we as students also have a right to be informed of non-identifying details that help us to be more prepared and cautious.

    ...

I'm in the 2nd semester now - so -- not sure if this is a "spike" or a high season thing or what. We should be better informed next week or so because AUC is calling an emergency meeting with the police and officials to see what's going on -- and report our concerns to them. SO -- if we have better info then -- you should see a post.

And -- just keep in mind -- there is crime everywhere - every neighborhood -- every class in society -- -- we just happen to be on a smaller mass of land -- and notice it more.

Again -- you should see a post when we have more info.

Not to mention we are lucrative targets. We're vastly richer than the average islander, have lots of nice things, and we have regular observable patterns too (ie white coat ceremony).

As for privacy, absolutely. Though it would be nice to have more info that would be beneficial to the rest of the student body such as location, time, etc. For instance, was it an apartment complex close to school? Far?

The apartments close to campus have some form of "security" whether it's an actual guard or someone paid to just sit there and watch.

I don't think you will be compromising the identity of the student if you tell us which building this took place in. I'm wondering if it's the one I live in ???!?!
