    The Island

    Advertisements

Before I went down to St Martin I read all the forums. I wanted the truth because i needed to make tuff decisions. So much information you will read as I did will be inacurate. Before going down to the island I remember reading a guys post and thinking what a negative guy. He went on to say how the island was as bad as the worse getto in america. I will tell you the truth positive or negative. Some will agree some will disagree. When you are done I think you will say xraytip told it like it was.
The island along the beaches are all very nice. The inner island is a third world country. AUC should not be a students first choice. I say this for so many reasons. I will try and answer all your questions concerning The island, the school, government, ect.

US is the first choice.....however once that is not possible AUC should definitely be 1 of 3 schools you consider.....most of us appreciate your concern and honest, however those that have gone thru ** already realize most of your concerns/problems are minimal in the grand scheme of things

Buddy, I hate to break it to you, but the Caribbean islands ARE third world. If you go to Ross, prepare for like 5th world or something.

    3rd world country?

Where are you from? You think the inner city is 3rd world?

Before I arrived on the island I was prepared for 3rd world conditions, no electric, little water, food that I thought might be unclean, a hut with a palm tree next to it, that they would call a school. I was surprised at how nice it was. I liked going to the grocery store to find US made food products, US fast food chains, and many US manufactured household products.

I will admit that parts of the island did remind me of Tiajuana, Mexico. The color of the buildings! Who paints their house bright blue or pink?

You do have to deal with power outages and water turned off for many hours during construction, but I would not say it was "3rd world."

After talking with transfer students from Belize, Nevis, Dominica, and other islands, St. Marten is definitely liveable. However, the people from other islands did say they lost weight there (maybe I should try that) from disentary via the water. I didn't have a problem drinking the St. Marten water, minus the taste.

Now that I am on another island I appreciate St. Marten more. The government & businesses want the school on the island. Almost every business gave us a student discount, I don't find that where I am now.

You will be doing all the work yourself) Spouse working on the island( not even when you pay the government $850 to apply for work wont happen legaly.
